Letter Q

LI: to extend our vocabulary with the letter Q

For Reading we were learning about words starting with the Letter Q. We started off by reading a text talking about the origin of the Letter Q, and where it came from. Our task was to create a DLO (Digital Learning Object) showcasing words we know starting with the Letter Q, and words we don’t know starting with Q. It was really fun and interesting doing because we got to learn new vocabulary, and we were able to do this activity with our friends.

Explanation (Transitional Vocab)

LI: to use transitional vocab

This week we have been revising explanation writing. Next week is our assessment week so we did this collaborative challenge to remind ourselves what is needed when we write explanations. When writing our explanations we focused on transitional vocab and TEEL, which is the structure of a paragraph. T for Topic Sentence, E for Example/Explain, another E for Evidence, and L for Link. The topic sentence is the introduction sentence of the topic, explain/example is explaining the topic, evidence is the statistics and numbers about the topic, and link is the sentence that links the end of the paragraph to the first sentence of the next paragraph.

Explanation: Transitional Vocabulary

Why is it important to make wise choices?

Do you use drugs? Do you know the effects it could cause? Drugs are a dangerous substance that are neither food, water or oxygen but can give serious damage to avid users mentally or physically. Drugs are a serious problem around the world and have had a massive effect globally.

As a result some people take them to feel good or to satisfy themselves. People are led into the darkness of drugs by growing up around them, or because of friends, therefore it is something they do to be cool or to be in with a group of friends. This is called “Peer Pressure”. Consequently they get addicted to these drugs, and crave more. These drugs affect us brutally, they affect our physical and mental health. For instance some people steal and on the other hand they work for people who will pay them money so they’re able to buy drugs. In spite of this, drugs are not all bad. In fact they help people relieve pain, help with medical problems.

Furthermore, this is why it is important to stay away from drugs or to make wise choices. A silly choice you make could ruin your reputation or life, and you might end up without a job, end up in prison, or worse, death. Above all, people have to be informed to make wise choices, because these drugs not only affect you but the people around you. Your family could be saddened about your addiction, or they might end up joining you. Would you want that for the people you love?

Facts and studies show that a person in a family or group of friends that is addicted to drugs affects the group mentally but also distances them. Can you imagine that? Having your family and friends fall apart because of your addiction?

LI: to use transitional vocabulary

For Writing we were practicing using transitional vocabulary, by writing explanations. Transitional Vocabulary is like the cause and effect, but the effect part. Transitional Vocabulary are words like: therefore, because, as a result, and for instance. An explanation is a type of writing that is a formal writing that explains how or why something works. The structure of an explanation is TIIC, which stands for: Title, Introduction, Information, and Conclusion. Our topic for the explanation was "Why is it important to make wise choices?". We first planned our explanation, and then started writing.

We had a bunch of words. We had to find out the meaning of the words, and the function of the words. We had to relate the definition and function to the topic, which were Aeroplanes. . After we finished all the words we had to predict what we were going to learn for the next couple of weeks. We were making origami aeroplanes to study Aerodynamics.

Vocabulary

LI: to build knowledge of vocabulary, and links words to create to the wider world
We have been talking about building vocabulary and linking words to the wider world. In our reading groups we created two google slides, one for vocab building and one for a game we made up which is Rap Lyrics vs Poetic Verses. For example a rap lyric, "Now matter how hard it gets, stick your chest out, keep your head up and handle it".

Play Reflection

LI: to build vocabulary and expression
For the last couple of weeks we have been doing plays and practising our expression and vocabulary. In my group the plays we have been doing were Super Saturday, and Kebabs. I really enjoyed tryiing and doing something new. The thing that was really difficult was remembering and expressing my lines. Next time I would express myself more when saying lines. My oral language has improved a lot more. If I got an example I think I could've done better acting as my character.

Flipgrid (Kebabs)

LI: to build vocabulary and expression
This week is the last we are doing plays. The play activity is teaching us how to figure out when someone is expressing an emotion just by their actions or words. It will also help us with our vocabulary. For example I learnt a new word which was "Pauper". The play I am doing right now is Kebabs. Our Must Do was to record ourselves on Flipgrid, tell us about our character in the play as the character. We also had to recite the summary of the play we wrote from last week.

Play Table Mat (Kebabs)

LI: to build vocabulary and expression
For the next two weeks we are practising another play. Right now the play I am working on is called "Kebabs". We did the same thing. We did the Play Table. We had to write down 6 interesting or new words to us, and define three of those words. Then try to summarise the play as a group in 25 words or less.

We then had to write down our lines and write down the Character Interaction. While also write down why we are talking to that person. Then write down the emotion use and talk about why the character feeling that way.

Play

LI: to build vocabulary and expression
We were learned how to express our feelings and figure out just by what they're saying their expression. It also built our vocabulary a bit like I learned a new word called "Ravenous". Our play was Super Saturday.. Unfortunately we didn't get to perform it due to the lack of people that were supposed to perform.

We also made a flipgrid and on that we summarised our play.

Play Table

LI: to build vocabulary and expression
We learned how to express and build vocabulary. We learnt how to fugure out what a character is trying to express using words. For example you are annoyed of someone, so you say for example: I heard it the first time. We are doing this by doing a play. We have to figure out our characters emotion so we can express it while we are doing the play.

Adverbs

LI: to build more interesting sentences
This week for Writing we boosted our vocabulary so we could have not boring and accurate words to have in our story. We had to find words that were Adjectives, Adverbs, and Verbs, and find as many different words for Boy/Girl, Said, and Emotions. We got into groups and each person from the group had to pick one of those word types. Then people from other groups doing the same word type as you had to get in a group and make a poster about that word type.

Before we started on our DLO we first had an example we made. The four words we did were Thwart, Opulent, Encroach, and Fetid. Thwart means to prevent someone from accomplishing something. Opulent means the comfort of luxury. Encroach means invading in someones property, space, or territory. Fetid means an unpleasant smell.

Time Vocabulary

LI: to convert between analog and digital time
This week for Maths we did more about Time. Our DLO (Digital Learning Object) was to write a list of Time Vocabulary's. While we wrote the words that are in our Time Vocabulary we also had to write the definition. I got some words from a site called Enchanted Learning. There were also some words I never knew like horology, and other words.
