Madam C.J Walker

LI: to complete the Summer Learning Journey
This task is from the Summer Learning Journey. This years topic for the Summer Learning Journey is Change - makers. The task was to pick my own scientist, technologist, or inventor to talk about. I had to write down their name, a description of what they do, and an explanation of what they have done to change the world.

I picked Madam C.J Walker who was one of the first self female millionaires. When she was young she was the first in her family to not be a slave. Before she was born President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. So she was a free citizen of the USA. But even though she was free her family was poor and her parents died when she was only 7. She then lived with her sister and worked, but never could go to school. When she was only 14 she got married and had a daughter, but sadly her husband died. She then started experiencing scalp disease which was itching and loss of hair on the scalp. She then actually started experimenting different hair products to help with her scalp disease. It actually worked and she started selling it. Then her business grew and grew.

  2. Hi Chris

Another great week on the Summer Learning Journey. Good to see that you are commenting on others. As you say it all helps get points.

Th/is person was someone I didn't know about. I wonder what she would think if she were to go into a supermarket now and see the range of products associated with hair care.

    Keep up the great work.

  3. Did you know Chris that...The Netflix series based on the life of Indianapolis hair care entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker has an official title and a release date. "Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker" will premiere March 2020 on the streaming service. In images released today by Netflix, Oscar-winning actress Octavia Spencer is seen wearing fashionable hats, gloves and gowns while portraying Walker — who amassed a fortune before her death in 1919 at age 51. Walker, known as Sarah Breedlove when growing up as the daughter of former slaves in Louisiana, moved to Indianapolis in 1910 and established a hair product laboratory, manufacturing plant and beauty school. Keep blogging, and commenting on others, to increase your chance of winning one of the awesome prizes and to keep up your learning over the school break!
