I think the main idea of this text is about thousands of rubber yellow ducks, blue turtles and green frogs floating out of a ship. The cargo ship was struck by lightning when a storm appeared in the sea.

One example of a supporting detail is that countries around the world have seen the rubber yellow ducks, blue turtles and green frogs.

Another example of a supporting detail is that Curtis Ebbesmeyer has been tracking the rubber yellow ducks, blue turtles and green frogs around the worlds ocean.

It is clear that the main idea is that at January 1992 was a ship that was bound from Hong Kong to Tacoma, Washington in the United States. Then while the ship was going through seas a big storm appeared on water, and the ship was struck by
lightning. The rubber yellow ducks, blue turtles and green frogs have also been floating half of the world. Then it broke down and there were 29,000 rubber yellow ducks, blue turtles and green frogs floating out sea.
Because people from other countries have seen the rubber yellow ducks, blue turtles and green frogs. Another reason is that Curtis Ebbesmeyer has been tracking the rubber yellow ducks, blue turtles and green frogs and says they need them to learn and know how the sea current works.

LI: to identify the main ideas of a text
What I learned were the main ideas of a story, article, or other kind of writing. The main idea is about what they are talking about in the story or article. The main idea also needs a supporting detail, like a cheetah runs fast that's the main idea. The supporting detail is how it runs fast.
How I learned was we did an activity with Mr Ogilvie. We had a story-line and we had to guess the main idea. We had to pick A,B,C or D. Another one was that we did a “Main Idea Summary Frame” we had to think about what was the main idea and tell two supporting details.
Hi Chris,
ReplyDeleteGood job, but we need to remember that the main idea is short and the supporting details add the information.
Also be careful you are not just coping from the article and actually try to express these ideas as your own.
