ASB Getwise (2)

LI: to learn about how to save our money

Marlon from ASB came again to teach us about saving money by teaching us following the ASB Getwise Programme. We got into our thinking groups and we learnt about how to save money by playing these games. We first wrote down the strengths we all each had in our groups, and then made a business idea out of all our strengths. My group was Sports Fashion, so we made sportswear for basketball. We then had to present our business idea similar to the show Shark Tank, and some groups went up and presented their ideas to the class.

Tech Reflection

LI: to learn about coding

For this term we transitioned to Coding with Mrs Ferguson. It was really cool and fun because we got to learn these new tools on coding. We were able to make animations with the coding as well as learn these different tools such as name tags, and calculators. It was really fun doing this because we got to do these activities with our friends and it was amazing.

Exponents & Greather/Less than symbols

LI: to explore exponents

For our Maths we were learning about Exponensts, and the greater/less than symbols. Exponents are in a way a simplified version of Multiplication just as Multiplication is a simplified version to Addition. We were doing our problems and equations, and continuing on with our exploration in Algebra. We later than started learning about our greater/less than symbols. The open side is the side the bigger number stays on, and the closed side is the side the smaller number stays. >, <, =.

Build, Test & Evaluate

LI: to learn about build, test, & evaluate

For Inquiry we were learning more about our rubber band rover and were learning about how to build it, what we would do when testing, and what we would be looking for when doing our evaluation. I was doing this activity with my group and it was really fun doing. We were able to see the materials needed to make our rubber band rover, and it was super fun being able to investigate the rover.

Silver Attitude - Represent the school at an outside function

LI: to be able to explain how I was able to represent school out of the classroom

For one of my Silver Attitude activities I had to explain how I represented the school at an outside function. I was able to represent the school at Tech, which was located in Tamaki College. For Tech we were being taught design and wood carving. For the term we were able to learn how to use many tools such as chisels, mallets, tri squares to help us create our design. My design was to make a phone holder. For this week I was polishing up my design, and shaping up my measurements to help me get a higher score.

Silver Attitude - Represent the school at an inter-school competition

LI: to represent our school at an inter-school competition

For one of our Silver Attitude activities we had to represent our school at an inter-school competition. Today we had a Football tournament. We had 5 games for the whole day. It was really fun playing and we were able to grab some wins.

Our first game was against Stonefields, and we had a toughloss 0 - 1. But we were determined to improve, and prove that we could play our bests.

Our next game was against Glenbrae. We were playing hard, and got a better result. As this game we had a draw, 1 - 1.

Our third game we went against Sylvia Park. This game we were doing much better, passing the ball and we were able to take the win. 1 - 0.

Our second to last game we went against Panmure District. We tried to keep the same energy as last game, and were trying to work harder as a team. We were lucky enough to take the win again, and celebrated with a score of 1 - 0.

Our last game we went against Panmure Bridge Team B, who were the other Yr 7&8 boys team. This game we tried hard, and went fast into the game trying hard to get a good record. After all the games we had played we improved drastically and won the game 4 - 1.

At the end of the day we had 3 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw.

Silver Attitude - Tutor someone who needs extra help with a skill

LI: to tutor someone on a subject or an area of learning

For my one of my Silver Attitude activities I had to tutor someone who needed some help with a skill. For Maths we were doing different Math equations in our thinking group. As we were all explaining to each other how we got the answer for the Math equations, my teammates Heavenly and Te Raumati got stuck on the decimal part of the equation.

So I helped them our explaining it on the whiteboard. It was really cool doing because later they found out why the mistakes were made and how they could have fixed it. It was a good learning opportunity for me as much as it was for them because I got to feel a sense of being a leader, and was able to teach someone with my own abilities.

Silver Attitude - Sophie Pascoe

LI: to learn about someone who has gone through rough times but is an inspiration to many people globally

For one of my Silver Attitude activies we had to learn about someone who has gone through rough times in their life but still are an inspiration to people around the nation and the globe. The person I picked was Sophie Pascoe. A New Zealand Paralympic Swimmer, an one of New Zealands biggest treasures. Up above in my DLO shows what she went through and that she was able to go through all the barriers in her life.

Silver Attitude - Public Health Nurses

LI: to explain the part that the Public Health Nurses do at school

For one of my Silver Attitude activities we had to explain what the Public Health Nurses do in our schools. The Public Health Nurses are the people who make sure we are healthy and ready for our learning at school. They regularly check up on us to make sure we are all healthy. They take us down to the Medic Cube to examine us and help us with any problems we are having.

Countries in Te Reo Maori

LI: to expand our vocabulary and knowledge in Te Reo Maori

For Te Reo Maori we were learning about different coutries and the names of them in Te Reo Maori. The countries we did were the countries of the continent South America, and countries a part of the United Kingdom. We were learning these different words with the help of our teacher Whaea Ode, and gave us quick activities to do in Te Reo Maori. For example having a small conversation with eachother.

Algebra

LI: to learn about algebra

For Maths we were learning about Algebra. When learning it we learnt about BEDMAS. BEDMAS is a rule or a type of law in Mathematics. BEDMAS stands for: Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, then Subtraction. When doing an equation you have to use BEDMAS, and you have to do it in the order that it was listed in. In the equation if there was brackets, you had to start with the brackets. If there were exponents you had to solve the exponents and so on.

Tech Reflection

LI: to learn how to construct our own toy

For Tech we were continuing our builds at Tech with Mr Grundy, at Tamaki College. I was making a phone holder. I was able to finish my joints and was able to clean it up. Make it look good. As I was finishing up I created more designs that could help me practise my measurements, angles, and how to express my creativity in a way.  It was really fun doing this because we were able to help each other and learn new things about wood crafting. Such as creating joints, how to use different tools, and how to create our own designs.

Shameful stain on NZs History

LI: To evaluate (form an opinion) the text and respond to the provocation

We read the article “Shameful stain on NZ’s history”, an article about New Zealand’s History on the racial discrimination on the Pasifika community. Our provocation was “Should the Government of today apologise for the dawn raids of yesterday?”.

In order to respond to this provocation we needed to evaluate the text by looking deeply at both perspectives. A perspective is point of view, or the opinion of one side. When exploring both sides of this provocation, we formed our personal opinions based on the information we read, and the information we already knew. In our DLO we have shared our different perspectives and have made an informed collaborative response to the question we were asked. We all agree that an apology is owed. It is important that this happens. What we didn’t agree on was who should give the apology. Our current government was not the party who organised the dawn raids. The party who are historically responsible should be the ones to step up and show remorse.

ASB Getwise

LI: to be wise with your money

Today we had a representative from ASB named Marlon from the ASB Getwise programme, came to explain to us about how we should think before we spend money. We had to stop and think, to make a good decision. We were learning this by playing a game. We started off with $1800 to go on a trip to Fiji, and we had to try to buy all the neccesities needed to go on the trip such as plane tickets, passports, accomodation and much more. But doing this we had to try to get as much fun points as possible.

This was really fun doing and I wish to do this again.

Moment In Time Poem (Self)

I heard the waves rushing onto the coast, with the sails fluttering against the wind and seagulls squawking in the sky

I saw the boats drifting above the dark blue water. Rocks surround the shore, people strapping up their helmets to continue on to the harsh waves of the ocean.

I felt the jitters go through my body, every muscle in my body was as tense as a rock. Although I was a bit antsy I felt eager to progress into the water.

I wondered when we entered the boat if we could catch wind for the sail, so we could be able to maneuver the boat.

LI: To use the language features and structure of published poem to help use write our own poem.

For Writing we continued with our Moment In Time Poems and did one by ourselves. It was really fun doing because we were able to express our creativity in our vocabulary and were able to have complexity in our writing. For my Moment In Time I was writing about the Sailing we did last week. This activity was really fun to do.

Moment in Time Poem

LI: To use the language features and structure of published poem to help use write our own poem.

We looked at the language features and structure of a poem called ‘A Moment in Time’ and used our experiences from camp to follow the structure and collaboratively create our own moment in time poem.
To describe what we heard, what we saw, how we felt and what we wondered we used our senses, adjectives and adverbs.

Adjectives are describing words, used to help make sentences more powerful. Adverbs are words that modify or describe verbs (action word).

Settings

LI: To use powerful words to describe a setting so that it paints a clear picture in the mind of the reader

A setting is the place, time and environment of a story to help a reader make a connection to your narrative you need to use your words in away that helps them form a picture of what you are describing in their mind. To do this we looked at an image and thought of 10 words that described and showed what we could see. Once we had thought of the adjectives or adverbs we used our smart searching skills to help us find synoymns that made our descriptions clearer. I found this interesting I was able to use different words and was able to increase my vocabulary.

Toys

LI: To strengthen connections to technology.

We have been learning about technological practice.  This week we have been learning about the 6 processes of Technological Design and how each one is important in the process of designing a product.
We are using the processes of technological practices to  design and build a rubber band- powered rover that can scramble across the floor. I found this interesting and fun because we were able to find the materials needed to make the rovers, and we were able to do it with our friends.

Cybersmart

Space Jam

LI: To find the most efficient strategy to answer the question

For Maths we did a Maths Problem consisting of Multiplication and Addition. To find out the answer of the question we first had to extract all of the Main Information to help us solve the equation. The question was based off the upcoming movie Space Jam. In my DLO it showcases the question, and all the Main Information I got from it, and how I solved the equation. It was really fun doing as I was able to do this activity with my friends and group.

Sir Isaac Newton

LI: To use your smart searching skills to find out who Sir Isaac Newton was and how his work connects to simple machines

For Reading we were learning about Sir Isaac Newton and his discoveries in groups, to help us with our researching skills and our collaborative skills. For our DLO we made a interactive DLO showing each of Newtons discoveries as well as explaining why hes so important in modern science. It was really fun doing this cause I got to learn about his disoveries in Gravity and inventions in Mathematics. It was really fascinating to see all of the accomplishments he's made in his lifetime.
