Commenting

LI: to learn how to smartcomment
I commented on Christians blog - post. He was blogging a DLO. On my comment I told him the great things he did, and I also gave him feedback on some mistakes he had.

Basic Fact Boxes

LI: to remember basic facts
For Basic Facts I had to answer equations which are either Addition, Subtraction, Division, and Multiplication. I did the Speed Demon Challenge, and I did Multiplication equations. It took me 3 minutes and 5 seconds to finish all the questions.

SSR Selfie

LI: to summarise a text
For SSR Selfie I read "Science But Not As We Know It!". They are talking about facts about the Galaxy, Science, and Space.

Gymnastics

LI: to develop body movements of balance, rotation and strength
We first started off by playing Tag but we had to navigate around in specific ways like hop around with one leg. We then did some stretches. We did the L - Shape, Seal, Butterfly, Cat, Straddle.

We then did another rotation. But some of the activities were different.
Rotation One: There was a beam to walk forwards on then do a little jump. We also had to cartwheel across or along a line. Lastly there was another beam we had to do a forward roll on. We then had to do a dive roll of the stage. We then had to do bunny hops on a beam.

Rotation Two: There was a trampoline to jump on and we had to go as high as possible then land, then front roll, then do the same thing but a dive roll. We then had to do a backwards roll. After we had to do candlesticks, then a full handstand, and a tuck handstand. Lastly jump of a board and do a 180 spin in the air.

Rotation Three: We had to do a handstand on a wall on bars. We then went on bars held ourselves on it. Next there were parallel bars and we had to hold our touching our bottoms then swinging. There was a beam and we had to do a Front, Back, and Side Support rotation. Lastly there were bars we had to go on and do mini push ups.

Multiplication Problems & Capacity

LI: to learn place value multiplication and tidy number
Capacity is how much an object can hold. Our task was to measure a bunch of objects and find out the capacity. The objects we had to measure were: Bottle Cap, Bottle, Plastic Cup, Spoon, Cleaner Alcohol Bottle, Lunch container, and lastly Pill container. We had to measure it and if it was uneven we had to pour the leftover bits of water into another measuring cup to find out the exact measurements. For our task we had multiplication word problems and we had to answer all of them.

Play Reflection

LI: to build vocabulary and expression
For the last couple of weeks we have been doing plays and practising our expression and vocabulary. In my group the plays we have been doing were Super Saturday, and Kebabs. I really enjoyed tryiing and doing something new. The thing that was really difficult was remembering and expressing my lines. Next time I would express myself more when saying lines. My oral language has improved a lot more. If I got an example I think I could've done better acting as my character.

Learn, Create, Share

LI: to use key vocab to unlock sentence and text structure
Explanation is a text that tells the Cause and Effect of a living thing or an object. We had to use keywords to unlock our sentences and structures of the text. We compared an Explanation and a Procedure. We compared it with the Manaiakalani: Learn, Create, Share. We had to write specifically about how we learn, create and share in LS1.

Collaborating Memes

LI: to collaborate on a task
Collaboration is when you work with someone on a project. We also talked about what kind of language we should say to our partner or group. Formal language is the best to say to your group. When collaborating we should plan out what is everyone's role.

Our task was to make a meme about collaboration. We had to have a role to make the meme. For example someone finding the picture.

For SSR Selfie I read one of the "Zeke Meeks" book series. The book was Zeke Meeks vs the Big Blah - Rific Birthday. This is about a boy named Zeke Meeks and how he is worried about how his birthday is going to turn up. It is really funny and has a lot of events in it.

Volume

LI: to calculate the volume of objects by measuring water displacement
Volume is the amount an object can hold. We first had a task which was to measure a bunch of 3D shapes and find out how much water it can hold. The first one we did as a class, then the rest we did it in our groups. We also had to write down the calculations and labels. We then had to make a DLO (Digital Learning Object) about how to measure volume.

Rotation One: There was a beam to walk backwards on then do a little jump, tips Coach Steven gave us was not to look back because it would ruin the balance, and tap the surface to see if you've walked it. We also had to cartwheel across or along a line. Lastly there was another beam we had to do a forward roll on. We had to do a dive roll which was front rolling off the stage. We then had to do bunny hops on a beam.

Rotation Two: There was a trampoline to jump on and we had to go as high as possible then land, then front roll. We then had to do a backwards roll. After we had to do scorpion handstands, then a full handstand, and a tuck handstand. Lastly jump of a board and do a 180 spin in the air.

Rotation Three: We had to do a handstand on a wall on bars. We then went on bars held ourselves on it. Next there were parallel bars and we had to hold our touching our bottoms then swinging. Lastly there was a beam and we had to do a Front, Back, and Side Support rotation.

Informal Language is casual speech. Formal Language is professional talk, like you mean business and not talking slang. You would usually say Informal Speech with your friends, and Formal Speech at a job interview or meeting.

Explanation

LI: to plan and write an explanation
We were learning about what is an explanation. An explanation text is a text that talks about how something works or why something happens. We had two explanations that were the same. We had to sort it out and put it in order while being timed. We then had to rewrite that explanation and make a diagram of that explanation. But we also had to put it on a Google Document because the explanation originally written looked like a procedure. So we put it in paragraphs to make it look like a explanation.

Rocket Experiment

LI: to understand what is needed for space travel
This week we started building our rockets. We made three straw rockets. Our independent variable was different shaped nose cones. So for each of the three rockets we made different shape nose cones. The three we picked were a cone shaped nose cone, flat nose cone, and a round nose cone. We then had to write the distances for each of them and had to write the average distance. We then had to write down the conclusion.

Maori

LI: to learn more about Patupaiarehe
We firstly watched a video about space. This was a story about how the stars, sun, and moon came to be. We then read a story of the exact same thing. We then had to make a slide about the Patupaiarehe answering: What are the patupaiarehe? What is the appearance of the Patupaiarehe? What were they like? Lastly Where were they found?

Stardome Trip

LI: to learn about our solar system
Today was the day we went to Stardome to learn about space. We first went into a space which they called "The Space Room". We first learned about our Solar System and all the planets, and moons.

We then did a scavenger hunt in groups. Around the gallery were a bunch of information we had to find out and answer them. We then went to the Planetarium and watched a documentary of the Wild Weathers of Space. We then looked at constellations. I learnt that a bunch of planets in our Solar System have crazy weather. Like Venus is super hot, Jupiter has crazy storms, Mars has the biggest dust storms, titan (saturns moon) have liquid on their planet which could support life, and a bunch more.

Responsibility

LI: doing things without being asked
Our topic for the next couple of weeks are responsibility. Our catchphrase is "Responsible is what I am, and that's the way of kiwican. Our activity was using tied skipping and balance a ball on it by working together. Once the ball was balanced we had to perform task while we still tried to balance the ball. That activity showed by being responsible for our role in a team.

We then spoke as a group about the different responsibilities we have to define what being responsible is.

Flipgrid (Kebabs)

LI: to build vocabulary and expression
This week is the last we are doing plays. The play activity is teaching us how to figure out when someone is expressing an emotion just by their actions or words. It will also help us with our vocabulary. For example I learnt a new word which was "Pauper". The play I am doing right now is Kebabs. Our Must Do was to record ourselves on Flipgrid, tell us about our character in the play as the character. We also had to recite the summary of the play we wrote from last week.

Word Problems (Addition and Subtraction)

LI: to identify what operation to do in a word problem
We had word problems to finish. They were both addition and subtraction problems. We had to use the following strategies compensating subtraction, place value subtraction, place value addition, adding in parts, and algorithm. In the document we had to draw the picture of the word problem, what do we have to do, starting number, agent number, working out, and then write the answer in a sentence.

Cause & Effect?

LI: what is cause and effect?
For Writing we learned about Cause and Effect. Cause and Effect is part of an Explanation. Cause and Effect is why something happens and what happens. We practised it by playing a game. We had a bunch of cards Cause and Effect. We had to match the cards together while being timed. So for our work we had to come up with our own Cause and Effects on how LS1 works.

Kiwisport

LI: to develop body movements of balance, rotation and strength
We first started off by playing Tag but we had to navigate around in specific ways like hop around with one leg. We then did some stretches. We did the L - Shape, Seal, Butterfly, Cat, Straddle and lastly Front, Back and Side Support.

We then did another rotation. But some of the activities were different.
Rotation One: There was a beam to walk backwards on, tips Coach Steven gave us was not to look back because it would ruin the balance, and tap the surface to see if you've walked it. We had to do a a Cartwheel on a wide beam, also had to cartwheel across or along a line. Lastly there was another beam we had to do a forward roll on.

Rotation Two: There was a trampoline to jump on and do a star jump in the air then land. We then had to do a backwards roll. After we had to do scorpion handstands. Lastly jump of a board and do a 180 spin in the air.

Rotation Three: We had to do a handstand on a wall. We then went on bars held ourselves on it. Next there were parallel bars and we had to hold our legs up. Lastly there was a beam and we had to do a Front, Back, and Side Support rotation.

Space Travel

LI: to learn about space travel
Our Inquiry topic for this term is Space. Right now for the next couple of weeks I am learning about Space Travel. Our first activity was to make a poster answering the questions: What is life like in space? How do we get to space? What will space travel look like in the future? Then we did a This Vs That poster on a real life rocket/spaceship to a fictional rocket/spaceship. We then on Google Maps marked as much places we could find of Space Stations that have launched rockets over 100 kilometres.

Play

LI: to build vocabulary and expression
We were learned how to express our feelings and figure out just by what they're saying their expression. It also built our vocabulary a bit like I learned a new word called "Ravenous". Our play was Super Saturday.. Unfortunately we didn't get to perform it due to the lack of people that were supposed to perform.

We also made a flipgrid and on that we summarised our play.

Basics of Gymnastic

LI: to learn the basics of Gymnastics
We firstly started off by doing warm ups and stretching. When we were warming up we were skipping backwards and forwards, hopping with one leg. Then for stretching we started stretching our legs out. Did a press up position and did one backwards and side ways while keeping our hips in the same position.

Next we started doing some activities. We were place in groups, and their were three areas. Each area had a activity about Gymnastics. There were beams to balance on, cartwheels to do, front rolls to do, hanging on to bars and a bunch more.

Explanation

LI: what is an explanation
We were learning about what is an explanation. An explanation text is a text that talks about how something works or why something happens. We made two posters. The first poster was to write about what is the difference between a Procedural Text, Information Report, and a Explanation Text. We also had to write the structure of each text. Then the second poster is to define the words or phrases: Passive Voice, Third Person, Time Connectives, and Present Tense. We also had a slide about what is an explanation and what is needed in one.

Patupaiarehe and the mountains

LI: to learn the geography of Aotearoa
Mount Manganui is a mountain in Tauranga. The Hunua and Waitakere ranges are mountains in Auckland. Patupaiarehe are fairies that lived on these mountains in Maori myths. I also learned about the Paitupaiarehe and mountains by listening to two stories. They are called "The Legend of Mauo" and the other is "The Tureha Wars". I learned where the mountains are by looking on Google Maps.

Kiwican (Honesty)

LI: to define what honesty is
For this term our new theme is Integrity and our topic for the next couple of weeks is Honesty. Our catchphrase was "talk to me, truthfully, this is called, Honesty!". Our energizer was called 3 sports. We had 3 sport actions. Basketball (action was shooting), Boxing (action was in stance), and Karate was (action was stereotypical karate stance). A teacher would say one of those sports and if yu did that action of the sport you were out. So the honesty part was to not cheat and be honest about it.

We then got together as a class and talked about what is Honesty? Why should we be honest? What bad thing could happen when dishonest?

Lastly for our activity we did Roleplays. Each group was given a situation about honesty. We then needed to act out how to be honest in that situation. My groups situation was breaking something. In our play someone broke another persons property and told the person that he was the one who broke it.

Commenting

LI: to learn how to smartcomment
I commented on Andrew's blog - post. He was blogging about the first apple computer. On my comment I told him a question, and the great things he did. His DLO (Digital Learning Object) was an ad for the first Apple Computer.

Ninja Kid

LI: to summarise a text
For SSR Selfie I read one of the "Ninja Kid Series". The book was called "Ninja Kid No. 1". It was written and illustrated by Anh Do. There are 3 books in the series. In the story there are a lot of episodes and events happening. For example there was a bunch of mutated spiders raiding a town.

Basic Fact Boxes

LI: to remember basic facts
For Basic Facts I had to answer equations which are either Addition, Subtraction, Division, and Multiplication. I did the Speed Demon Challenge, and I did Subtraction equations up to 20. It took me 3 minutes and 11 seconds to finish all the questions.

Simple, Compound, and Complex Sentences

LI: to show an increasing knowledge of how a range of text conventions can be used appropriately
We recapped on what a Simple, Compound, and Complex sentence is. A simple sentence is just one idea. A compound sentence is two ideas joined with a conjunction, or in a simple way it is two simple sentences joined with a conjunction. A complex sentence is starting the sentence off with a Conjunction, and separate the ideas with a coma. We had a slide deck given to us. There was a bunch of words mixed up and we had to put it back in order. There were two slide decks. One was Simple Sentences, and the other Compound Sentences. We then played a game. There were a bunch of questions we had to answer. For example: what is a complex sentence?

We also learned what the difference between homophones and what homonyms are. A homophone is two words that sound the same but have different spelling and meaning. A homonym is two words that sound the same and have the same spelling but the meaning is different.

Play Table

LI: to build vocabulary and expression
We learned how to express and build vocabulary. We learnt how to fugure out what a character is trying to express using words. For example you are annoyed of someone, so you say for example: I heard it the first time. We are doing this by doing a play. We have to figure out our characters emotion so we can express it while we are doing the play.

Word Problems

LI: to learn part addition and place value addition
We learned two new different strategies. Place Value Addition and Adding Part Addition. Adding Part strategies is you try to make a tidy number with the numbers. So it can be added more easily. Place Value Addition is when you add the ones from both of the numbers. Then add tens, then hundreds, thousands and more. Then you add all of the tens, hundreds, and thousands and more. In our groups we got a piece of paper and had a world problem to solve. We had to use one of the strategies we learnt. So for our Must Do we made a chart. We had a bunch of world problems to solve. We had to use one of the strategies to solve the problems

Wednesday 1 May 2019

Maori

LI: to learn the stories of Maori and the language itself
Whaea Odie read us a story about Mt Manganui. It is a story about how Mt Manganui got in its current place. We then searched up on Google Maps where Mt Manganui used to be and its trip to its current place. Next we made a Google Document of what we would say in Maori to introduce ourselves. Like Ki Ora.

Sailing

On the 30th of April me and a bunch of other students from LS1 went down to Okahu bay to take part in sailing. We firstly got taught by one of our Instructors Steve how we put the boat together. We were all shocked at how easy it was. In each boat was two people, one person controlled the rudder (to steer the boat), and the other controlled the sail (to control the boats speed).

We sailed from ASC all the way down to Mechanic Bay. It was a long journey but so much fun. On the way back our Instructor Justin told us to do the Titanic Challenge. It is when one person would go to the front of the boat, while the other person was controlling the boat.

We then went back to shore to eat lunch and got back into our boats to the water. We were trying to get as much toys thrown into the water by our Instructors JR, Justin, and Steve. We then capsized our boats and tried to get back in.

Thank you Rotary for sponsoring.
