Kiwi Can Comment

LI: to comment on peoples blog - post
For commenting I had to comment on someones blog - post to help them out if they have any mistakes in there blog - post. I blogged on Elaario's blog post and he was blogging about what he did at Kiwi Can.

Basic Fact Boxes

LI: to remember basic facts
For Basic Facts I had to answer questions which are either Addition, Subtraction, Division, and Multiplication. I did Multiplication and Division and it took me 1 min and 33 seconds to finish all the questions.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever

LI: to summarise a text
For SSR Selfie I read one of the "Diary of a Wimpy Kids book series". The book was called "Cabin Fever". It was written and illustrated by Jeff Kinney. There are over 10 books in the series.

Haiku Poem

LI: to identify vocabulary and language features for use in writing a poem about feelings
I was writing a poem about feelings. We had four type of poems to pick Diamante, Cinquain, Limerick and a Haiku. I picked the poem Haiku. In the poem we had to write about our feelings and how to deal with it, or channel it, or even change it to something positive.

A Diamante is a poem that has one word at the top and the two lines or sentence under the word is describing that first word. The middle line is a phrase. Te last word one the bottom is described on the two sentences above the word. There are 7 lines in a Diamante.

A Cinquain poem is a poem that must have a one word title. (noun), next it must have two adjectives that is describing the noun, after that it needs three - ing words, after that is has to have a phrase and finally it has to have a synonym for the title.

A Limerick poem is a rhyming, comedic poem. It has five lines. The 1st, 2nd, and 5th line should rhyme, but 3, and 4 rhyme with each other.

A Haiku is a poem that has 3 lines and it involves the seasons. There is a pattern. The pattern is that the first line or sentence has 5 syllables second line has 7 syllables, and last of all the last line has 5 syllables.

Editing Recounts

LI: to revise and edit a recount
We used all our knowledge from the past few weeks and we wrote a recount. The recount we had to write was a Kiwi Can, Kiwi Sport, or Music recount. We then had to get in pairs and give each other our recount. Then we had to edit each others recount. When we've done that we had to check our own recount which was checked and edited, then see the changes that were made. The changed were all worth a specific amount of points

Points system.
1 point for every change/addition made
1 point if an adjective is added
1 point is an adverb is added
2 points if the title was reworked to be more interesting
2 points if the word said is changed to be more interesting
2 points if punctuation is added (Exclamation, Question mark, Ellipsis, speech marks)
5 points if the sentence has been developed using our strategy from 3 weeks ago
5 points if the changes makes TREE more visible
-2 points if a capital letter is used outside of beginning of a sentence and a persons name
-10 points if there is only Full stops and/or commas
-20 points if only adjectives have been added
-20 points if there is under 10 changes and/or the changes didn’t make sense

Chime Bars (Music)

LI: to play songs using the notes C, F, A, and G
We played Chime Bars and used C, F, A, and G to play songs. We did it as pairs, so we had to work together and play at the same time. There were also Piano's to play with. We played the songs, "One Call Away", "Shotgun", and "Lean On".

Summary & Current Events

LI: to unlock Keywords to summarise a text
We had a book to read and we used a template to help us summarise. On the template we had to find or highlight the keywords. Then we had to start writing the 5 W's & H. Lastly we had to try and summarise the book in 25 words. The book I read was called "Turbulence".

We then had a template made from Mrs Anderson. We had an event we had to summarise and write about. The event we wrote about is "Wellington Beaches going smoke free". We had to find the 5 W's and the H.

Good Friendship and Bad Friendship

LI: to learn what is good and bad friendship
We first played an energizer called "Last Man Standing". You run around and when a name is called out that person becomes the tagger, then the tagger has to tag as much people. Then someone would say freeze. The people who were tagged is eliminated. The Last Man Standing is the winner.

We then talked about what is Friendship? What is a Positive Relationship? What is a Negative Relationship? We then later talked about secrets, and who would you tell them to and why? We also talked about what are bad and good secrets?

So to help us understand what bad and good secrets are we played "Secret Cards". We had got a pair of cards, and we had to talk as a group and decide which are good secrets, and which are bad secrets. Later we played GKQ (General Knowledge Questions).

Statistics (Map of PBS)

LI: to learn about the class or school using statistics
We were learning about statistics. Statistics are gathering information to answer questions. We were trying to answer a question about the school. The question was: Where is the most popular place to sit and rest in school? We used resources like Google Spreadsheet, Google Forms, and Google Drawing, and etc.

We learnt by making a survey and using the class or school to help. To also improve our statistic skills. We used a template give to us to help us sort out our survey.

Ki O Rahi

LI: to learn the real game of Ki O Rahi
This week for Kiwisport we played the actual game of Ki O Rahi. There are two teams in Ki O Rahi. Ki Oma and Taniwha. Taniwha gets points by throwing the Ki to the Tupu (The Rock), Taniwha team are only allowed in Te Roto and Te Ao. Ki Oma score by touching the Ki to the Pou (Teeth) and scoring a try by getting the Ki to Pawhero (Island), they are only allowed to be in Te Ao, but if they are going to get a try the can go through Te Roto and get to Pawhero.

The Game starts by a kick. A kicker from Ki Oma has to kick the Ki to the Keitiaki. The Keitiaki have to catch it or its a handover to Taniwha. When the Keitiaki catch they have to pass it to one of the Ki Oma members. We also had rippa tags. If a person that has the Ki, and one of their tags are ripped its a pass. If both are ripped its a handover to the next team.

Paragraphs and Punctuation

LI: to make improvements to a recount
We used the things we learned from the past two weeks and used it to improve a recount. We also learned more about punctuation and what they are used from. For the punctuation we had to list as many types of punctuation. We had to know what they were used for in our Writing Groups. We then had to make a poster about the Punctuation we listed. We also had a messed up recount given to us, and in our groups we had to put it back in the proper order of TREE.

The Worlds Worst Children: Bertha The Blubberer

LI: to summarise and retell a text
For SSR Selfie I read a book called "The Worlds Worst Children". In the book it had a bunch of mini stories about bad and spoiled children. One of the mini stories is Bertha the Blubberer. It was about this girl who would always whine, and tell it off on her brother. Even though her brother didn't do anything she would still tell on him. She had done this to him for his whole life, but once she failed and didn't ever get to have dessert.

Times Tables

LI: to remember basic facts
For Basic Facts I had to answer questions which are either Addition, Subtraction, Division, and Multiplication. I did Multiplication and Division and it took me 1 min and 14 seconds to finish all the questions.

Place Value and Decimal

LI: to shift between place values by multiplication
We learned more about Place Value. Place Value is a value of each digit in a number. For example you have to understand that 2346 is made up of 2000, 300, 40, and 6. Not just 2, 3, 4, and 6. We learned by using materials like sticks, and we grouped them in tens and hundreds.

When you x10 the place value shifts to the left once, and if you multiply it by 100 it will do the same thing except twice. It is also the same with x1000 except you shift it to the left three times. Division is similar with multiplication except you shift it to the right which makes it smaller. If it is divided by 10 it will shift to right once, and so on.

2019 Oscar's - Keywords

LI: to unlock keywords to summarise a text
This week for Reading we were learning on how to use and unlock keywords to summarise a text. We had a story given to us, and we had to highlight the keywords in that story. We then went through some keywords, like are those keywords important. Why are they? Why aren’t they? We had a template that we had to use. We had to get a story from KiwiKidsNews, and put that story on the template. We then had to highlight the keywords and the Five Ws we can find, we then had to try and summarise the story under 25 words.

For SSR Selfie I read a book called "The Worlds Worst Children". In the book it had a bunch of mini stories about bad and spoiled children. One of the mini stories is Brian Wong who was never ever wrong. It was about a kid who was never wrong except once. He was wrong about thinking he could count to infinity.

Cooperative Games

LI: create a game that would encourage building characteristics from our previous lessons
For Inquiry our Must Do was to make a game that was cooperative. It had to have the Structure of TREE (not writing). TREE stands for: Teaching Style, Rules, Equipment, and Environment. Teaching Style was how you taught the game. Rules should be clear and simple, and should only be changed when necessary. Equipment should be used smartly and should not be disrespected. You should think of which environment is good for the game.

Stan Walker

LI: to apply the different strategies we use as readers
For Reading our Must Do was to pick a person from the categories: Music, Drama, Business, Politics, Science, and Sport. We had to pick the categories by playing GKQ (General Knowledge Questions). We picked Music and the person we picked was Alan Walker. The strategies we used were:
Activating Prior Knowledge
Questioning
Skimming
Scanning
Summarising

We also had to answer the questions which are: What are their stories, What was their influence, How are they well known, What influence do they have on the public, and How do they represent New Zealand.

Music

LI: to play the notes or chords C, F, A, and G
For Music we first started off by playing the Chime Bars. We played the chords by missing a note then playing the note next to it. So we play those two notes at the same time. We learned the notes or chords C, F, A and G. C is on the third fret and bottom string. A is the second fret top string. F is second fret top string, and first fret second bottom string. G is the hardest which is third fret bottom string, third fret third string, and second fret second string. We played the songs Shotgun and One Call Away.

Ki O Rahi

LI: to learn the real game of Ki O Rahi
This week for Kiwisport we played the actual game of Ki O Rahi. There are two teams in Ki O Rahi. Ki Oma and Taniwha. Taniwha gets points by throwing the Ki to the Tupu (The Rock), and Ki Oma score by touching the Ki to the Pou (Teeth) and scoring a try by getting the Ki to Pawhero (Island).

Adverbs

LI: to build more interesting sentences
This week for Writing we boosted our vocabulary so we could have not boring and accurate words to have in our story. We had to find words that were Adjectives, Adverbs, and Verbs, and find as many different words for Boy/Girl, Said, and Emotions. We got into groups and each person from the group had to pick one of those word types. Then people from other groups doing the same word type as you had to get in a group and make a poster about that word type.

Types of Abuse

LI: to learn about the types of abuse and what to do when abused
Constable Cyrus came over to teach us type of Abuse, and what to do when abused. We also did an activity. The activity we did was Constable Cyrus would read a scenario and we would have to pick if it was:

  1. Not Abuse
  2. Physical Abuse
  3. Emotional Abuse
  4. Neglection
  5. Family Violence
  6. Sexual Abuse
  7. Cyber Abuse.

Not Abuse is not being harmed in any kind of way.
Physical Abuse is harming someone or an animal physically.
Emotional Abuse is harming someone emotionally by saying something personal or just being mean.
Neglection is when someone doesn't look after their child or a priceless object.
Family Violence can be physical, emotional, neglectful, or even sexual.
Sexual Abuse is when someone tries or touches you in inappropriate ways.
Cyber Abuse is when someone harms you digitally, or tries to see you in person.

5 things needed in a blogpost

LI: to write a blog - post using a template
We learnt about what to write in a blogpost. We needed 5 things in a blogpost. The five things are a Title, Labels, Learning Intention, DLO, and a Blurb. In a blurb you need what you skills you have learned, how you learnt, and what you used to learn. We talked about what we needed in a blog - post.
We used the template to learn about the 5 things in a blog - post.

Co - operation

LI: to learn the meaning of cooperation
This week for Kiwi Can our new topic is Cooperation. But we first started off by playing an energiser. Our energiser was called Opposite. Miss Paige would say a command and we would have to do the opposite. After we shared an understand of what cooperation means and what it is.

We then played an activity called Command and Conquer. We were into four groups and a person from each group had to go to the teacher, the teacher would tell the people a instruction. Then that person would go back to their group and tell the instruction. Which ever group does the instruction first and properly they get a point.

Place Value Flipgrid

LI: to count groups of 10 and 100 in large numbers
We learnt about Place Value. Specifically we learned how to tell how many hundreds and tens there are in a large number.  So to start off the session we had a bunch of numbers on the whiteboard, and we had to say what that number is or how much tens, hundreds, or thousands are there. We did it in groups and got points every time we got the answer right. Then for our Must Do we had a Place Value Grid to complete. Our other Must Do was to make a Flip-grid.

Golden Ranger Comment

LI: to learn how to smartcomment
I commented on Leon's blog - post. He was blogging about the Golden Ranger. On my comment I told him somethings he needs to fix, like his DLO (Digital Learning Object) layout, and he should write more on his blog.

Good Teamwork and Bad Teamwork

LI: to identify characteristics of a health/non healthy relationship
For Inquiry we learned what a healthy/non healthy relationship is, and what good/bad teamwork is. So for our DLO we first wrote on two padlets.

The first padlet was Types of Relationships. Our categories were Home, School, and Community. For example at home you have a relationship with your parents. A relationship at school could be with your friends. A relationship you could have in the community could be a librarian. But it always doesn't have to be a person. For example at home you could have a relationship with an object that you really admire, and if it were to be stolen, or lost you would be really sad.

The second padlet was how relationships can change. For example your Dad leaves to another country because of work. That changes the relationship but still doesn't end it.

Then we made we made a Body Outline and for that we had to write about what are the negative emotions, and actions a bad teammate would do. We also had to write what positive emotions, and actions a good teammate would do.

Next we did a T - Chart that has the things needed in a Good and Bad Team. We then had to rank what the number one thing is needed in a good and team, then rank it down.

Basic Fact Boxes

This week I did my Basic Facts. I did my Multiplication and Division. I did my 2, 5, and 10 tables. Then I did my 2, 5, and 10 division. I also timed myself and it was two minutes and fifteen seconds.

SSR Selfie 2019

LI: to summarise and retell a text
For SSR Selfie I read a book called Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Old School. On SSR Selfie I had to answer questions like who are the main characters, whats the main point of the story and etc.

Reading Strategy

LI: to identify different reading strategies readers use
For Reading we firstly started of the session by playing GKQ (General Knowledge Questions). So we answered questions and if we get it right we could pick a Reading Strategy to do. I picked Summarising, Visualising, and Synthesising. We had to make a poster and a slide deck for each Reading Strategy.

Visualising Poster
Visualising Slide
Synthesising Poster
Synthesising Slide
Summarising Poster
Summarising Slide

Ki Omas Role

LI: to learn Ki Omas Role
For Kiwisport we first started off the session by practising the start of the game. A member of Ki Oma is a kicker, and has to kick it to the Kaitiaki from Ki Oma. If the Kaitiaki catch it, Ki Oma starts. But if it rolls or bounces before they catch it, Taniwha has the ball.

After we played a modified version of Golden Child. The Ki Oma team had to run with the ki and touch all the pou, and then get a try by touching the ki in pawhero. While the Taniwha team were trying to stop them by throwing the ki to the tupu.

Modifying Sentences

LI: how to make a detailed sentence
For Writing we learned on how to make a simple and boring sentence to a really interesting and detailed sentence. We had to make a simple sentence, and add an adjective, a when, a where, a why, and a how.

Music (Ukulele)

LI: to learn how to play the ukulele
For Music we first started off by playing the Ukulele. We learned the notes or chords C, F, A and G. C is on the third fret and bottom string. A is the second fret top string. F is second fret top string, and first fret second bottom string. G is the hardest which is third fret bottom string, third fret third string, and second fret second string. After I got to free-play on the Piano.

How to tell the time?

LI: to tell the time on an analogue clock
For Maths I learned how to tell the time. I learnt by using a mini clock that you could change the time with. So with those mini clocks we played a game. Our teacher would shout out a time and we would have to put the time on the mini clock as fast as we can. For our DLO (Digital Learning Object) we had to make a poster on how to read time. We also used a Clock Face Generator to help us with it.

Praise

LI: to learn the meaning of praise
For Kiwican we started off the session by playing our Energizer. Our Energizer was called "Rock, Paper, Scissor, Shoot", or just "Rock, Paper, Scissors". We had to play Rock, Paper, Scissors with another person. Then if you lost you had to turn around and touch the ground. Then go tag your opponent. We then kept playing with that person or we could switch with another.

Later we talked about the meaning of Praise and what does it mean? Praise means worshipping someone or admiring someone. After that we then played a game called Kickball. We had to get into two groups. Then one group is defending and the other attacking. The attacker had a ball and had to kick it as far as they could so they could score a try, while the defending team had to get the ball and tag him with it. The attacking team scored a try by running, and coming back. Or they could run and stay at the safe zone, while their teammate scores and run back they can run back as well.

How to make a Blog - Post

LI: to write a succinct blurb for a blog - post
Writing a succinct blurb is important to tell people what you learned about. In a blurb you need to write: what you learned, how you learned, and what you used/did to learn it. The activity we did was to write a blurb on the CARE Awards we have in LS1. What we used was the example blurb we made of using the idea of CARE Awards. A sentence you should not start with is: we got into groups, first thing we did was, our teacher told us to, etc. Good first sentences should be short, and gets to the point.

Types of Touch Poster

LI: to make a poster about one of the things we learned on KOS (Keeping Ourselves Safe)
This week for inquiry we had to work together as a group to make a poster about one of the topics we have been learning about. The poster I made was Types of Touch.  The three types of touch are safe touch, confusing touch, and the unsafe touch. An example of the safe touch is a high five, a confusing touch would be a wet willy, an a unsafe touch is slap in the face.

Taniwha's Positions

LI: to learn the positions of team taniwha
This week for Kiwi Sport we learnt the positions of taniwha. Team Taniwha can only stay on Te Roto (Moat/Lake). Also it can go on Te Ao (World) . We first started off by timing how much throws we can get to the Tupu (Rock) in one minute. We also did a time trial on how long it takes for everyone to get one throw to the Tupu (Rock).

Later we then added defenders which defend the Tupu from being hit by the ball. So we added defenders and timed how much in a minute we can get the ball to touch the Tupu.

We then played Rescue Te Ara which is where there is a person as the wife who has to be saved. Te Ara is at Pawhero (Island). Then there are Taniwhas on the moat trying to tag the people who are trying to save Te Ara. When some of the rescuers successfully get to Te Ara they have to go cross back through the Taniwha trying not to be tagged.

Lastly we played a game where we had to tag people with a ball, but we couldn't run with the ball. So we had to pass the ball around to tag people. It was Boy vs Girl.
