Matilda Character Description

LI: to novel study
For the next couple of weeks are going to do novel studies. We did novel studies on Roald Dahl books. The Roald Dahl book I am reading is Matilda, which I really like. We had a bunch of activities to do. This week the activity I did was Character Description The characters I described were Miss Honey and Miss Trunchbull. Miss Honey is a teacher and Crunchem Hall Primary School. Miss Trunchbull is the headmistress of Crunchem Hall Primary School.

Figurative Language

LI: to investigate figurative language
Figurative language is saying something but not actually meaning it, not saying it directly. Like stop beating around the bush doesn't actually mean someone was beating around a bush, it means to stop avoiding a questions or ignoring something else. Literal Language what the words define. Like the car is blue. We've learnt five types of figurative language.

Simile is comparing two things by using the words like or as. An example is "He was as fast as a cheetah". Another is Metaphor which is also comparing two things without using like or as. For example "He was a pig at dinner". Next is Personification which is giving human traits to inanimate objects or ideas. Later we learned Hyperbole which is exaggerating to show strong feelings or effect. Another example is "My house is a million miles from here". Understatement is the exact opposite of Hyperbole, it is expression with less strength then expected. For example "I'll be there in a second".

Tennis

LI: to learn the forehand and backhand grip technique
For the term our Kiwisport is Tennis. We first started off learning the two grips. The forehand grip technique was putting your dominant hand at the bottom of the racket. The backhand grip technique was two hands holding the racket but the dominant hand is also at the bottom while the weak hand is at the top. To practise these techniques we got balls thrown at us so we could hit the ball while doing the techniques. We then practised them again by doing some rallies with a partner.

Illegal & Legal Images

LI: to understand legal use of images
A legal image is an image that is Public Domain which the owner gives the right to the public to let you use it. An illegal image is an image that you don’t have the right to use but you still are. Our task was to write the definition of a Legal an Illegal image, find two websites each for illegal and legal images. We also had to find three examples of legal use of images and illegal use of images.

LI: to learn about Te Reo Maori & Maori
We were learning how to speak Maori. Saying, who is your friend, what is your name, and more stuff like that. We then moved onto our task which was completing a bunch of sheets. Our first sheet was No hea koe. No hea koe means where are you from. We had to write the cities and suburb that we were from. But we had to write them in Maori. Then we did the countries we were from and had to translate those countries to Te Reo Maori. Lastly we did Ko wai koe which is translating the maori phrases into english. For example Ko wai koe means "Who are you?".

Kiwican

LI: to learn about our strengths and weaknesses
This week was the last week were going to talk about "Respecting ourselves". We recapped on what we did for the pas few weeks. We first played our energiser. Our energiser was that we had to get in groups and the leader of the group had to go to the teacher, and get given an activity. Then the leader has to tell their group the activity and complete it. Then later we talked about strength and weaknesses and said what they were, and we ourselves told our strengths and weaknesses. Later we played Human Knot.

Commenting

LI: to learn how to smartcomment
I commented on Mote's blog - post. He was blogging about what he did for Reading. On my comment I complimented him, and gave him feedback.

Basic Fact Boxes

LI: to remember basic facts
I took on the Speed Demon Challenge. I did my Times Table and it took me 3 minutes and 16 seconds to finish all the equations.

SSR Selfie

LI: to summarise a text
For SSR Selfie I read "My First Encyclopedia". It is a non fiction book which is a book that is telling a facts. The book was very interesting. It covered a lot of different topics from the Human Body to Earth & Space. It was really cool because there were projects that were related to the topic and also there were cartoon boxes so it was easy to absorb the information.

Karate Kid

LI: to revise the structure of a recount to reaffirm the marking criteria
The structure of a Recount is TREE. T is title. R is reveal, which is the who & when. The first E is events which is the what. Ending is our feelings, what we should have done differently. We were working on our recount writing. We had to write a recount in test conditions We wrote an Imaginative Recount which is like a narrative but with the recounts structure. Like having 1st person, TREE and more. Our scenario for the Imaginative Recount was winning a Sports Tournament.

Company Organizing

LI: to learn the differences between Goods & Services
Goods is something you buy with your money, that you can hold. For example you buys sneakers, and they give it to you to your hands. Services are something you give money to but you can't really hold it, they do something for you. For example a taxi, you give them money to take you where you want to go. We had a bunch of little papers with company or business logos on them. We had to sort them out however we like. For example the Gucci one would be in the Fashion section, and the KFC one would be in the food section.

Novel Study | Matilda

LI: to novel study
For the next couple of weeks are going to do novel studies. We did novel studies on Roald Dahl books. The Roald Dahl book I am reading is Matilda, which I really like. We also made bookmarks to help us keep track of our reading or novel studies. The bookmarks we made had to represent what we think a good reader does. Every time we read the limit we had to do an activity on that chapter.

Orchestra

LI: to learn about the orchestra
We went to an Orchestra performance in the city and it was amazing. There were a bunch of beautiful instruments. There were the violin, viola, double bass, clarinet, flute, trumpets, french horn and a bunch more instruments. The trumpet even played the Star Wars intro song. Each instrument showed us a demonstration. There was a play performance as well, it was about a goblin cursing a father, and how the daughter saves the father. While the play was going on there was music playing in the background from the orchestra which made the story more tense.

There was also a violin solo by a amazing player, who also taught us a bunch of different playing types of the violin.

Kiwi Can

LI: to learn how to respect ourselves
We first recapped on what we did last week. We talked about how we are unique in our own way and how we should accept ourselves for who we are. Our energiser was called "Verses". There were two food items, and we had to pick which one we thought were better. We then kind of had a persuasive argument on why the food item we chose was better. We then kept on talking about why we should respect ourselves. Our activity was called Wisdom vs Mights. We had two groups, the wisdom group had to complete a bunch of riddles & brain teasers. While the might group had to do a bunch of physical challenges.

Maori

LI: to learn about Te Reo Maori & Maori
We were learning how to speak Maori. Saying, who is your friend, what is your name, and more stuff like that. We then moved onto our task which was completing a bunch of sheets. Our first sheet had god from Maori Mythology. We had to match the god with what they control. For example if we had Papatuanuku we would match it with Earth Mother. Then the next sheet was Kotahi, which was a bunch of Maori words we had to translate to English.

I commented on Elaario's blog - post. He was blogging about what he did for Maths. On my comment I complimented him, and gave him feedback.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

LI: to summarise a text
For SSR Selfie I read "Diary of a Wimpy Kid". It is a fiction book which is a book that is telling a story. The book was very interesting. It was made my Jeff Kinney and the pseudonym is Greg Heffley. A pseudonym is a fictitious name normally used by authors.

Basic Fact Boxes

LI: to remember basic facts
I took on the Speed Demon Challenge. I did my Times Table and it took me 3 minutes and 2 seconds to finish all the equations.

Enterprise & Business

LI: to define & describe the terms enterprise and business
Enterprise meaning online is "a project or undertaking, especially a bold or complex one". Which means to agree on a project or some work. Business's meaning online is "a person's regular occupation, profession or trade". Which means a person's job. We first started on with an activity. We had the word Enterprise. We had to guess what the meaning of Enterprise meant in our groups. We did the same thing with the word Business. We then in our groups had to put in our definitions of Enterprise & Business, and put it aside with the real definition. We then had to get a bunch of business's, local, national, and international. We then had to write down what they sell, and their price range.

Vocabulary

LI: to build knowledge of vocabulary, and links words to create to the wider world
We have been talking about building vocabulary and linking words to the wider world. In our reading groups we created two google slides, one for vocab building and one for a game we made up which is Rap Lyrics vs Poetic Verses. For example a rap lyric, "Now matter how hard it gets, stick your chest out, keep your head up and handle it".

Lotto Winner!

Our scenario for the Imaginative Recount was winning the lotto ($1,000,000). We then looked at the marking criterias and rated ourselves.

Math Recap

LI: to recall core skills and knowledge for addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, and place value
We recapped what we learnt in Term 3. We recapped our learning by doing a quiz. We added & subtracted time & decimals. We also recapped on our times tables & basic facts. We also did division and grouping. We also calculated area and perimeter. There was a shape and the measurements were on there so we had to calculate it. You calculate the perimeter by adding all the sides together, and you calculate the area by multiplying the height & width. We also recapped on our fractions by sharing fractions, identifying fractions, and fractions of sets.

The strategies we used were using our basic facts. Tidy Numbers which is making the numbers to make a ten. Place Value is adding them by the place value. Repeated addition & subtraction is splitting the numbers and doing it step by step. Algorithm is also adding the numbers by Place Value. We also did rounding and compensating which is rounding the number to the nearest ten. Reversing is doing the opposite operation. For example 35 - 25 = ? So you do addition 25 + __ = 35?

Maori

LI: to learn Maori
We first got into groups and in our groups we talked with Whaea Ore. We got taught a bunch of Maori questions. We got taught "Ko wai to koe?" meaning "Who are you?". "Ko wai to ingoa?" meaning "What is your name?'. "Ko wai to hoa?" meaning "Who are your friends?". Then there are a bunch more. We then had an activity to do. We watched a video in Maori, and we had to translate what they were saying.

Kiwi Can

LI: to respect yourself
Respect is to treat people the way you wanted to be treated. We then started on our Energiser called "Fruity Tutti". One of the Kiwi Can leaders basically said a fruit that meant an action. So apple meant jumping forward, orange meant to jump back, and banana was a 180 jump. We also did it in a circle so when we did it, it would look in sync. But if we did the command wrong we would bump into each other. We then talked about Respect, and what we should respect. But we then started talking about respecting ourselves, by being hygienic, self control, self discipline, controlling our emotions and much more.

Then our activity was "One truth & One lie". We had each teacher or leader saying two statements about themselves. We had to guess which statement was true.
