LI: to celebrate book week

This week we celebrated Book Week in PBS for 2021. We had a bunch of people that dressed up for the special occasion, there were a variety of characters such as superheroes, regular book characters, and much more. It was really fun as we took photos with our classes, and were able to read books to the younger students in our school, the juniors. I really loved and enjoyed the event and it was an amazing experience with PBS. 

ASB Getwise

LI: to be wise with your money

Today we had a representative from ASB named Marlon from the ASB Getwise programme, came to explain to us about how we should think before we spend money. We had to stop and think, to make a good decision. We were learning this by playing a game. We started off with $1800 to go on a trip to Fiji, and we had to try to buy all the neccesities needed to go on the trip such as plane tickets, passports, accomodation and much more. But doing this we had to try to get as much fun points as possible. 

This was really fun doing and I wish to do this again. 

Duffy Assembly - Marc Duffy

Marc Duffy was our Duffy role model for Term 1s Duffy Assembly. Marc was a kid who wasn't really bright, he had a really troubling childhood. But he had someone who changed his life around completely, he was able to transition into boxing and was NZs reigning champion for 5 years. He then got older, and became a really succesful businessman. His speech was really inspirational and I really enjoyed his speech, it was really inspiring. 

Key Competencies 2021

LI: To compare the Key Competencies we think we will use on camp and the Key Competencies we actually used.

   

Before we went to camp our challenge was to think about when we might use the Key Competencies as we faced the challenges.  When we came back from camp we looked at this and compared how we thought we would use the Key Competencies and how we actually used them. I found this activity great cause I was able to reflect what I did before, during, and after camp. It was really cool to see the differences and what I did during those times.

LI: To a collaborative brochure that tells others why Kokako Lodge is a great place to go on camp

Over the last week everyone challenged themselves during the sessions at archery, high ropes, kayaking, raft building, camp cooking, pancake race and team building/orienteering. Our group collaborated to create a brochure that shows others why Kokako Lodge is a great place to go on camp.

I found this activity fun because I got to show others what I experienced during camp.

This week LS2 have been celebrating our camp. I created this collage to show my time at camp and the activities I enjoyed. To make my collage effective I thought about the size of the images, the angle of the images and I tried hard not to leave any gaps between the photos. I found this activity fun because I was able to see the achievements I've made at camp, like the high beam.

LI: to learn about the Kokako Bird

This week, everyone in LS2 has been given a set of different challenges based on our camp. For this activity we used our smart searching skills to find information about the North Island Kokako bird. I found this activity fun because I was able to find new things and interesting facts about the Kokako Bird. Kokako Lodge was named after the extinct bird. 

Recount: Kayaking

The Big Fall

“Slosh” the water pounded down on the rocks, then the water sprinkled up high like a seagull in the air. We admired the beauty of the waterfall glistening in the sunlight. The kayak was balancing on the top of the blue water, excitement running through my body. Snatched my paddle and jumped on my kayak. I paddled with energy and excitement. The water was being pushed back as the kayak was pushed forward. We were kayaking around the top of the blue water, above the deep, deep hole of the Hunua Ranges. 

We heard the splash of the waterfalls hitting down on the rocks and water, we felt the little drops of water flying through the air. We were hit by the water drops as we flowed through the water. Going through the water with the paddle was as easy as cutting through butter. 

As it was simple paddling through the blue water, there were times our arms dropped dead. They couldn’t tolerate the pain anymore. We were frustrated with ourselves, the flow of going through the water paused. Many times we crashed into each other feeling the shock of the after effect. We were dripping wet not knowing if it was sweat or water, but with a smile on our faces going out again into the water of the Hunua Ranges. 

As I went back into the water, I felt the water splash on my face by the impact. The wind lightly hit me, as my paddles cut through the water.

LI: to write 5 minutes of our experience at Camp

Last week we went to camp at Kokako Lodge. My 5 minute snapshot shows my personal voice and I have tried hard to paint a picture with my words to describe what I was doing and how I felt. I found this activity cool because I was able to recall and present what I felt at camp, and gave the audience a feel of what the experience I went through at Camp. 

Tech - Plants & Foodmakers (Week 7)

LI: to learn about plants 

For the last week of Tech this year our 8th topic was about plants. We first talked about how plants grow and the structure of a plant. We talked about what plants need, such as Carbon Dioxide, Water, and Sunlight. We talk about how each need works and how it happens. We then got 10 leaves from the school, all different leaves. We categorized them using a table talking about their size, texture, colour, and pattern. We talked about how big the leaf is, how it feels, the colour of the leaf and the pattern on the leaf.

For one of our Distance Learning activities I did a Daily Maths Challenge. The Math questions I did were about using multiplication and addition strategies. On my first question, I used a strategy using multiplication and addition. On my second question I used addition as well as multiplication to figure out the answer. On my last question I again used a strategy that included both addition and multiplication.

For one of our Distance Learning activities I did a Daily Maths Challenge. The Math questions I did were about using multiplication and division strategies. On the question, I used a strategy using multiplication and division. The question was about how much bread was needed for a hui or four days. I also showed a picture of me working it our on paper.

LI: to learn about art
For one of our Distance Learning activities we did some art. For this art we had to use a specific shape in our art. We had to use our imagination to figure out how we could use that shape and make it into art. I made that shape into a birds beak I really enjoyed this activity because I was able to use my imagination and creativity.

Venn Diagram

 

 LI: to learn about NZ in 1870
For one of our Distance Learning activities we did a Venn Diagram. A Venn Diagram is a DLO (Digital Learning Object) that shows the differences and similarities between two things. For our Venn Diagram we compared the differences and similarities between New Zealand in 1870, and New Zealand now in 2020. I thought it was a fun activity because we got to see what it was like in 1870 in NZ.

For one of our Distance Learning activities I did a photo montage of New Zealand back in 1870. The pictures on the Photo Montage show what Men, Children, and Women had to wear back in the days in 1870. It also showed the differences in buildings and cities as well, one of the pictures are actually of Princes Street, Dunedin.

For one of our Distance Learning activities I did some summarising on the Ballad Poem I did from the 6 hats activity. For this summarising activity, I had to write down 20 important words from the Ballad Poem, and then write down the 6 even more important words from the 20. Then using the 6 words I had to summarising the Ballad Poem using only a few sentences.

LI: to learn about poetry
For one of our Distance Learning activities, I did a 6 Hats activity. Each of the 6 hats are a reading strategy, like evaluation. I was watching a Ballad Poem which is a narrative poem that starts using folk music. I used the 6 hats to summarise and evaluate the story from the Ballad Poem. I thought the activity was pretty fun, and it was also a very challenge activity.

For one of our Distance Learning activities we did some art. For this art we had to use a specific shape in our art. We had to use our imagination to figure out how we could use that shape and make it into art. I made that shape into a puzzle piece, and wrote down "Where is the piece going to go?". I really enjoyed this activity because I was able to use my imagination and creativity.

Literary Devices

LI: to learn about figurative language For one of our Distance Learning activities we were learning a little bit about figurative language, like similes and metaphors. Our first challenge was to match a sentence using figurative language to what the actual figurative language is. For our second challenge we had to write our own definition of the figurative language.
