Kupe and Captain James Cook Venn Diagram

LI: to compare the similarities and differences between Kupe and Captain James Cook
For Reading we've made a Venn Diagram on Captain James Cook and Kupes Voyages. We made this Venn Diagram together in our own Reading Groups. They are two of the explorers who have founded New Zealand or Aotearoa. A Venn Diagram is a DLO (Digital Learning Object) which compares the differences and similarities between two characters, objects, or people. We did three differences and three similarities between both of the explorers voyages.

Summer Learning Journey 2020

This year the Summer Learning Journey again hosted an amazing holiday programme. The Summer Learning Journey is a holiday programme to help maintain the grades we had in school, so when we started school we couldn't be behind. This was amazing because not only did it help our school but other schools around New Zealand. This year the top three winners for the Summer Learning Journey was Alex, Victoria, and Sakina. But I also ended up getting a big prize. I ended up getting an awesome prize, which was a rugby ball signed by the warriors. The results from our school were outstanding and amazing.

Kiwican Reflection

LI: to learn about giving it a go
Our theme for Kiwican is Positive Relationships, and the topic is Fairness and Fairplay. We first started off by playing our Energizer changing places. There was a cone in the middle, and when someone said the magic word, you had to try to get the cone before your partner. Today we learnt about giving it a go. Giving it a go is about try new things, and doing your best at it. We then moved onto our activity called 1v1. There were two people going back to back and we had the leader say something like "do the most dramatic cry". Then we tried to do it better then our partner.

Tech Reflection

LI: to learn about robotics and programming
This week for Tech we started with our Mbots again. We programmed the robots by using Mblocks. We started by programming the robot to start flashing lights and we did different challenges with it. We flashed the light in different colours, and we changed how long it would flash each time. We then did started programming the Mbots to make different noises. We had different activities like making the Mbot hitting different notes like C4, D4, and much more.

Tech Reflection

LI: to learn about robotics
For the first week of Tech we learnt about programming and algorithm. Algorithm is about giving instructions. We first started off with an activity in groups. We had one person who was the programmer and the others who were the robots. The programmer had to give out a set of instructions so the robots would be able to do it. We then got real robots and started learning the basics like programming & algorithm. On the programming website we got to learn how to get the robot flashing different colours. We also had DLOs about algorithm and programming. We had to write down the input which is the materials, then the algorithm which was the instructions, and then the output which is what happened

Waitangi Summary

LI: to summarise about the Treaty of Waitangi
For Reading we made a collaborative summary about the Treaty of Waitangi. We wrote down notes from a book we read on the Treaty of Waitangi. We then picked in our groups what twenty words were important, and from those twenty words we had to pick six words. Using those six words we tried to write a summary on the Treaty of Waitangi. We used literacy weaving to help us identify the keywords to write our summary on the Treaty of Waitangi.

Kiwican Reflection

LI: To include and engage others by being sensitive to their feelings

For Kiwican this term our Theme is Positive Relationships and our theme for the next couple of weeks are Fairness and Fairplay. We first started off by playing our Energizer which was changing places. We then talked about how fairness and fairplay could go in a game situation. For example you can be fair to people in a game by having an equal amount of players in each team. We also talked about what courtesy was. Courtesy is being polite and having manners toward other people. We also talked about Common sense which is making wise choices. Lastly we talked about Consideration which is being thoughtful of others. Then all those words come up to Empathy. Empathy is being all those things we talked about together. We then did a roleplay on Empathy. Our role play was about a person who got hurt by the other team, while his teams help him up and the person who hurt him helps him up

Explanation

LI: To collaboratively structure and write an explanation
Why plastic pollution is a problem for our coastlines

Did you know plastic pollution is a big problem to our ocean and marine life? Plastic pollution is taking over our coastlines. Plastic pollution is an environmental issue that affects our ocean, marine life and land. Many of our oceans are polluted with plastic. Think about Thailand, their oceans are so polluted that it changed from normal looking water to pitch black.

When the plastic washes up into the water, seabirds and marine animals mistake it for food. They also get caught up in plastic and the rubbish which ends up deforming the marine animals. There are pictures of turtles who’s shells have been deformed because they have been caught up in the plastic. Do you feel good about that?

When you litter your rubbish it goes to the water system and leads to the ocean. It gets washed up on our coastlines. Then it degrades into small pieces of plastic that get washed into the ocean. Seabirds and marine animals mistake it for food or get caught up in the plastic who then get deformed.

If you see a piece of plastic just take some time to pick it up and put it in the bin. A small action could make a big change. So use the rubbish bin.

Plastic pollution in and around our waterways has become a real problem. Each year the litter we drop  travels out to sea through drains, streams, lagoons and estuaries. This rubbish in our oceans harms and kills millions of sea creatures, who get caught in it or mistake it for food. We wrote a explanation on Plastic Pollution, and looked into this project called Love you coast. Love you coast is a project in New Zealand who pick up rubbish all over the country.

Kiwisport Reflection: Cricket

LI: to learn the basic skills of cricket
Our teacher was Brian from HPPC who came here to teach us some cricket. We first learned our bowling skills by getting into groups of 3 - 4 and try to hit the wicket or the cones. If we hit the cones  we put the cones on the wicket and if we hit the wicket we remove a wicket. We also learned this technique from Brian which was to have our arm pointing at our target, and when we threw the ball we would step forward so we would have more power. We then went onto our batting skills, we got into our groups again. In each group we had one batter who would hit the ball, and the the others who were the field team trying to gather the balls then put them back. While the field team is getting the balls the batter has to do as much runs as they can until the field team put the balls back.

Number Strategy

LI: to learn number strategie
Today in Maths we worked in our thinking teams to find the answer to maths questions. In the photo you will see my group, The Marvellous Mathematicians working out the number value of our group name. To do this we used addition strategies and our place value knowledge. In the second activity we worked as a group to put the population of countries in order. To do this we used our place value knowledge and strategies.

National Current Events

This week for reading we’ve been looking at national news for current events. We have been looking at news articles to put under reading topics such as Timeliness, Continuity, Oddity, Relevance, Magnitude, Unexpectedness, Impact and more . The news we needed to find had to be national which meant in the country, We have worked in groups and in our group was Victoria, Ellenora, Diana, Florence, Ong and myself.
