Explanation


LI: to plan and write an explanation
We were learning about what is an explanation. An explanation text is a text that talks about how something works or why something happens. We had two explanations that were the same. We had to sort it out and put it in order while being timed. We then had to rewrite that explanation and make a diagram of that explanation. But we also had to put it on a Google Document because the explanation originally written looked like a procedure. So we put it in paragraphs to make it look like a explanation.

Making a Tunnel


LI: to see how tunnels are capable of their purpose
This week for Inquiry we made a Tunnel. The materials or equipment we used were:
Straws
Spaghetti
Tape
Rubber bands
Glad Wrap
When we all made our tunnels we buried it in sand and out a little car in it. We saw how each and everyone are strong tunnels. We all tested each tunnel from each group. We saw the differences in each one, and how we could've built it better or plan it better. This was a group activity. I was in a group of five.

LI: to learn about tunnels
This week for Inquiry we were learning about Tunnels. We got in partners and had to talk about the history of tunnels. Our DLO (Digital Learning Object) was to make a poster or presentation about the history of tunnels. We wrote about what are tunnels, how do tunnels work, how to build a tunnel. We got the information from some sites. We also added some videos on our DLO (Digital Learning Object) to give more information on tunnels.

Defensive Structures and Bombs




LI: to learn about bombs and structures
This week we had a visitor named Mr Ching. He taught us about Dumb Bombs and Smart Bombs. Dumb Bombs are like grenades. The Dumb Bombs go where you aim them. When you shoot them you have no control. Smart Bombs are bombs that you can control when you launch them.

After that we watched a video of the results of missiles, and shock waves. Shock waves are the air that are really strong and can destroy you. We also learned something about a sonic boom. A sonic boom is when the air compresses together and releases and makes a big clap, or boom sound.

After that we first got into groups of five and had to make a structure that is strong enough to stop the structure. Our materials were paper, tape, scissors, and straws. We had to make a structure to be strong enough to protect a helicopter. When we finished we had to test our structures. We simulated a shock wave using boards.

Roads, Highways, & Motorways

                      

LI: to learn the differences between Motorways, Roads, and Highways
This week we were learning the differences about Motorways, Highways, and Road. We also had to look at the differences between Roads, Streets, Crescents, Places, Closes, Lanes, Arcades, Drives, and  Avenue. Our DLO (Digital Learning Object) was to make a presentation about differences between Highways, Motorways, and Roads, and also the different types of roads. We learned all of these by looking at videos that gave us a lot of information. One video was about ho to build a road, how to design a road, and the different types of roads.

Urban Plannning


LI: to learn the history about pedestrian crossing, roundabouts, and traffic lights
This week we made a screencastify about the history of pedestrian crossing, traffic lights, and roundabouts. We had to talk about who was the inventor of each, how did it change through time and more. We also had to talk about how we think they will change throughout time. When we finished we would show our video/screencastify/presentation to the class, then we would get feedback on how to make it better, what was wrong, and the problems, from Mr Ogilvie.

Inquiry Games




LI: to learn how these traffic control games teach us about urban planning
This week we were playing these games that were about traffic control. Two of the games were about Traffic Control. So we had cars going across the road. We had full control over the traffic light. But if we made a mistake the cars would crash. The other game was a game that we had to make tracks or roads so cars could go. It was really fun. We also finished up our Urban Planning Screencastify and showed it to the class. We had to talk about in the screencastify about the history of Pedestrian Crossing, Traffic Lights, and Roundabouts.

Sunrise & Sunset Structures


LI: to make a silhouette with a digital and physical environment
Today we made a city-scape silhouette. We used both digital and physical things to make it. What we first did was find city-scape then trace it or shape it up with blocks. When we did that we printed it. We first made a sunset or sunrise with paper, and some glue. Then we added our city-scapes to our sunrise or sunset. A silhouette is outline or shadow of a animal, person, or and object. A city-scape is a painting, drawing of a city, or a place that is important.

Foundations

                                           LI: to learn the different types of foundation
This week for Inquiry, Mr Ogilvies Inquiry group talked about different types of foundation. The were five they learned. The first was the slab foundation or slab grad. The slab foundation is when you dig a whole. Then fill it up with some concrete. Then also add some bars to give more strength for it to support the weight of what of a structure. The next foundation is called the Pier or Pile footing. A pier foundation is like a fence. You dig a hole, then put a wooden stick, or stone, then fill it up with concrete. They would normally support the weight of a house. It can support it by having a surface on the large stick. Then they would build the structure on top of the foundation. The walls are their to make rooms and separate rooms from each other. But they also support the weight of floors and roofs. You dig a hole, then put the wall in. After that fill in the hole with concrete to keep it stable and still. Then they learned about the column foundation. A column foundation is a structure that is under concrete and made as a base of a wall. The foundation is part of the structure that directs contact with the soil that loads into it. Then lastly they learned about the Cassen foundation. The cassen is a watertight retaining structure used as a bridge. The construction of a concrete dam, or for repair of ships.

Skytower Trip


LI: to learn about the history, and construction of the sky-tower
Today we went to the sky-tower and learned about the history and the construction of the sky-tower. We got split into groups. So first my group went to watch a video of the construction, and history of the sky-tower. The sky-tower was first built in 1997. It cost 75 million dollars to build the sky-tower. It is 328 metres tall. It is also a really safe building. It can withstand earthquakes, and lightning. How it can withstand lightning is, a device that is on top of the sky-tower and absorbs the electricity from the lightning. How it also can withstand earthquakes is because the surface or foundation is really deep underground. When they're is a fire or a earthquake they go into the refuge level. Which is a place for people to go safely when they're is a natural disaster. They are three refuge levels. They are all on level 44, 45, and 46. Each refuge level can hold 120 people. So 120 x 3 = 360. While we did that we also talked about volcano's. There are 48 volcano's in Auckland. You can see 20 of the volcano's from the sky-tower. The sky-tower weighs about 6000 elephants.

Construction (Panmure Bridge)

                       
LI: how have it changed and adapted human overtime
This term our new theme was Construction. So we are looking at buildings that have an impact on society or maybe the world. So this week our structure we picked was the Panmure Bridge. It was really cool discovering things about Panmure Bridge. We learned by getting into groups of three and make this slide. We also did an activity before this called "I think, I wonder, I see". We had eight pieces of paper. There was a photo on each and we had to write what we see, wonder, and think. We all thought the pictures weren't related. By the time everyone finished we found out all the old images were actually related to Panmure Bridge.
