Natural Disasters (Earthquake)

LI: to research about Natural Disasters

To practice our research skills, as well as our literacy and inquiry we've done this task. This task was about researching a Natural Disaster, and in this DLO we had to inform people what that natural disaster was, how to stay protected, and emergency services that would help in that certain situation. The natural disaster I was researching was an Earthquake, which is the surface of the earth shaking and rumbling. In this task we also had to add what we would do next time if there was an earthquake, and earthquakes that happened in Aotearoa.

Mary Anning

LI: to learn more about our science subjects through people

For Reading our task was to study a scientist from each of the 4 main science branches, which are Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Astrology/Geology. I was studying Mary Anning who studied Geology, and is a huge icon in the science community. My DLO shows the 5Ws and H being answered about Mary Anning. This task was really fun to do, again because I really got to learn about Geology through Mary Anning. Mary Anning is such a huge icon because of her huge discoveries. One of them being the discovery of the Jurassic fossils.

Cybersmart: Matching Info and Images

LI: To understand that images should add to the information in text by allowing the reader to make a visual connection

For Cybersmart, we were learning and talking about how we should always match our picture with the info or text. It is because if the picture is realy vaguely related to the text its gonna be hard to understand, and hard to make a visual connection. It would be difficult to make a visual connection because the picture is taking the visual connection somewhere else, and because of that it could lead to confusion. If the picture and the info are strongly related, it would be easy to understand, easy to have a good visual connection, and no confusion.

Charles Darwin

LI: to learn more about our science subjects through people

For Reading our task was to study a scientist from each of the 4 main science branches, which are Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Astrology/Geology. I was studying Charles Darwin who studied Biology, and is a huge figure in the science community. My DLO shows the 5Ws and H being answered about Charles Darwin. This task was really fun to do, again because I really got to learn about Biology through Charles Darwin. Charles Darwin came up with the theory that all species of life came from a common ancestor, which has become a foundational concept in the community of science.

Alfred Nobel

LI: to learn more about our science subjects through people

For Reading our task was to study a scientist from each of the 4 main science branches, which are Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Astrology/Geology. I am studying Alfred Nobel who studies Chemistry, and is a massive figure in the revolution of science. My DLO shows the 5Ws and H being answered about Alfred Nobel.  This task was really fun to do, because again I really got to learn about Chemistry through Isaac Newton. I got to study Chemistry by reading the formula of how Alfred Nobel invented the dynamite, which was a huge contribution to science.

Isaac Newton

LI: to learn more about our science subjects through people

For Reading our task was to study a scientist from each of the 4 main science branches, which are Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Astrology/Geology. I am studying Isaac Newton who studies Physics, and is a huge person in the science community. In my DLO it showcases the milestones of Isaac Newton, and some interesting facts about him. I've laid it out in a kind of way, showcasing the main parts of his life, which I thought was a good idea.

This task was really fun to do, because I really got to learn about Physics through Isaac Newton. I got to study Isaac Newton, as well as some Physics.

Food Tech (Week 7)

LI: to learn how to make MaPo chicken and eggplant
At Tamaki College, we had Food Tech with Mrs Heka. This week she taught us how to make MaPo, which is a Hawaiian dish. It consists of some meat, a sauce, and rice. We first got all the ingredients, and then we got the tools needed to make the dish. We first started off by dicing the veges which were the onions and garlic. We then diced our meat, which was chicken and vegetarian sausages. We then started cooking the onions and garlic, then added the meat in. Later we added the sauce to give it a kick and some flavour. We also added eggplant. Lastly we added a mixture of corn flour and water to give it moisture. We ate this dish with rice and it was lovely.

Career Pathways

LI: to find the qualifications needed for a dream career

For careers this week, we were talking about what we need to do for our dream careers. We talked entry requirements, subjects we should focus at school if we wanted to become a certain career, and even educations and qualifications. I want to become a Building & Constructions Manager, which is in the engineering field. To see the entry requirements, subjects to learn, and qualifications needed for being a Building & Construction Manager, my DLO is up top to showcase all of that.

Manaiakalani Survey

This week the schools in the Manaiakalani cluster had to do a survey. The Learning Space 2 students helped the Year 1 - 3 students who were new to technology and Ipads. I think this was good, because it showed the juniors that we are helpful, and we can be approachable.

Dance Class (Wk 1)

LI: to use the movement of our body to make something creative

This term for Kiwisport we are doing Dance. Our teacher for this term was Ms Rebecca. Dancing is the movement of our body, and we use that to express ourselves creatively. There is no right or wrong way to dance, you just dance like how you feel. This week our theme for Dancing was "Me and my body!". We first started off with some warm - ups by doing some yoga and dancing in circles. We then did an activity, there was a song playing and when it paused Ms Rebecca would say a shape and we had to make that shape using our body. Our next activity involved in us being in groups and making shape formations collaboratively with our group.

Life Education

LI: to learn about Life Education

At Life Education we learnt about "Making wise choices", to match up with out Inquiry topic for this term. At Life Education we talked about Hauora, and the four walls. We also talked about our brain, which would be part of our Hauora. We also talked about non - wise choices, and things that trigger non - wise choices. The bad choices we talked about were Drugs, Smoking, and Vaping. We talked about why and how people get into those habits. For example people might start smoking or vaping because of peer pressure from friends. Their friends might me doing it, and you might do it because you thinks its cool.

Science Summary | Reading

LI: to summarise the information.

This DLO is highlighting our summary about what we know about science. In our groups, we have been sharing our ideas on posted notes and found the key words which we then wrote a summary about what science is. To then create a summary about the topic. We needed to skim and scan for key vocabulary to create this DLO. We also had to join our ideas together to create a more efficient idea.

We used our new question dice to help us construct some questions we want to find more about. The three questions we made using the dices were:
  1. When did science start?
  2. How will science progress in the future?
  3. Who was the first scientist?

Science Main Ideas | Reading

LI: to find the most vital ideas from the information to help us answer the question “What is science?”.

This DLO is identifying the ideas of science which we have learnt from the information we have gained. To find the vital information, we negotiated by collaborating and communicating with our team. We shared our opinions and ideas, we took notes and from them we selected and rejected information to get to our final conclusion.

For us the 3 main vital ideas are:
  1. Science is the discovery of What, Why, and How events happen
  2. The three main branches of science are Physics, Chemistry, and Biology
  3. There are two main categories of science, and they are Basic and Applied Science
