Dr Jessa Rodgers

LI: to complete the Summer Learning Journey
This task is from the Summer Learning Journey. This years topic for the Summer Learning Journey is Change - makers. The task was to try to figure out what age was Jessa Rogers was when she won the NAIDOC Youth of the Year award in 2010. But instead of just saying the year, we are saying it in years, months and days. So for example 13 years, 11 months, 22 days. We then had to state our answer and explain how we did it.

Jessa Rogers was born in April 7th 1985 and won the award on the 9th of July 2010. I first started off by counting the years up to 2010. The year 1985 - 2010 is 25 years. Then from April the 7th I counted up to the 9th of July. Which is 3 months and 3 days. So my final answer is 25 years, 3 months, and 3 days.

  1. Hi Chris!,
I have enjoyed reading your working out about Dr Jessa Rodgers. I like how you explained the maths solving, but I have a different answer from your. My answer is 25 years, 3 months and 2 days instead of 3, because 7 + 2 = 9. Did you find this activity difficult?

    Good Job!

  2. Kia ora Chris,

Firstly congratulations for finishing the Summer Learning Journey, you are an absolute star.

I really appreciate that you have attempted this mathematic-like equation. Here are some of my workings -
    2010 - 1985= ....years
    9th April → 9th July = ....months
The difference between 7th and 9th = ....days
The answer is 25 years, 3 months and 2 days

The Manaiakalani cluster team and I are in the middle of going through your blog posts and tallying up points at the moment. While we do that don't forget, now that you've finished the programme, you can earn many more bonus points and help encourage other students to finish the SLJ programme by leaving thoughtful comments on other students' SLJ related blog posts!

Congratulations again Chris, I hope that you're proud of yourself!

  4. Hola Chris! You have a great maths strategy for questions like these! I think this activity was very creative, and actually pretty fun to solve. We all agree on 25 years, 3 Months, and 2 or 3 days. It's amazing we were able to workout something like this...Great job!

  5. Hi Chris,
Your working out on this math problem is great. I think that you did a good job solving it. Do you know why Jess Rodgers won the NAIDOC Youth of the Year award? Also, how long did it take you to work out this problem? Keep up the good work.
