Making a Racket

LI: to complete the Summer Learning Journey
This task is from the Summer Learning Journey. This years topic for the Summer Learning Journey is Change - makers. The task was to talk about the three things we learned from two videos and one thing we would still like to know. The two videos were about Gender Pay Gap in Tennis, and about Serena and Venus Williams fighting for equality in pay. For example Venus Williams made $80 millions dollars in her career while winning 23 grand slams, while the highest paid male Novak Djokovic makes $100 million despite only winning 12 grand slams. So the gender pay gap is pretty huge.

The first thing I learnt is that the Gender Pay Gap is a huge controversial topic.
The second thing I learnt is that the Gender Pay Gap is bias to men.
The third thing I learnt is that the Gender Pay Gap isn't really fair, because if two people did the same job, same hours, but one of them still get paid more its just not going to be fair.
The on thing I would like to know is do men get the favour.

  1. Kia ora Chris,

Your post looks great! Thank you for sharing interesting pieces of information for the video about both Serena and Venus Williams. The gender pay is a very controversial topic which promotes a lot of discussion and opinions to be raised. It is interesting learning how there is a bias towards men being paid more for basically the same job! Is there anything you'd want to still know about with this topic?

Do you follow Serena and Venus Williams in tennis? Do they inspire you in sports?

  3. Hi Chris! I'm really glad you watch the two videos, and were able to learn a lot about the gender pay gap. It is definitely a very controversial topic, in which everyone is going to have their opinion, views, thoughts, and points. I think this problem effects multiple communities, places even bigger than sports which is pretty unfortunate. Great job Chris!

  4. Hi Chris,
I like your blog post about the gender pay gap. I think that the gap isn't fair because as you said if the women are doing the same thing and job they should get paid the same. What do you think should change to make the pay the same? For example, the men's wages brought down to the women's or the women's wages brought up to the men's.
