Perimeter and Area

LI:  to use a formula to calculate the area of rectangles and squares and investigate the relationship between the perimeter and area of rectangles
This week we we learning about Perimeters and Area. The perimeter is the length distance exactly around a shape. The area is how much can fit or how much space there is in something. So we did that by watching a video from Math Antics: Area Video & Perimeter Video
They tell us how to figure out the perimeter of a shape and also a area of shape. We first had a Glossary we had to figure out. We had words that we used to learn in Math and had to write the definitions. Then we had a Google Drawing to fill out. We had to figure out the Perimeter and Areas of shapes. Later we had a ruler task. We had to measure shapes on a sheet and also figure out the perimeter and area of the shapes.

Structure and Language Features of Persuasive Writing

LI: to identify the structure and language features of a persuasive text
This week we were identifying the structure and language features of a persuasive text. The structure of a persuasive text is OREO. It stands for:
Opinion
Reason and
Explanation
Opinion
The opinion is when you state what you are trying to persuade people to do, or see. The reason and explanation is there to back up your opinion. Show some facts about your opinion to back it up. Then the other opinion is to make sure people know what you are stating and standing for. The language features are Simple Present or Infinitive tense. Emotive words, and also cause and effects. Simple present are words like: the, have, and, and more. Emotive words are the words that are really important. The words that give people more of a understanding. Causes and effects are when your state had something that caused a problem or something, and the effect of that cause.

Kiwi Sport

LI: to learn how to use life jackets
This week we were learning survival skills with life jackets. We first learned how to do a safe entry with a life jacket. It was a pencil dive but modified. So we put one hand on the life jacket and the other covering our nose and mouth. The reason we cover our nose and mouth is so the water doesn't come in our body. We also learned something called a cold shock. Which is when you go into really cold water and your mouth opens up. Then the water goes in your mouth. So that's why we cover our nose and mouth.

Then we learned about when there are a ton of people out in the ocean we have to stick together. So one way we did was make a chain. We first lie back, then hold the back of the person's life jacket, then kick to the side, but not the person in front. Another way was to huddle. Make a circle then wrap your arm under each others armpits. But when someone is cold or hurt in the group put them in the middle of your circle. We also had to put our knees up but not all the way up or you could lie down then sink or drown.

We also learned that there is a hood on the back of our life jacket. The life jacket was for lying down. So we swam lying back down, and also the front as well.

We also learned the H.E.L.P position. H.E.L.P stands for:
Heat
Escape
Lessening
Position
How we do the Help position is we have to stay in a cannonball pose, so just tuck your legs up and wrap your arms around them. The reason it is like that is because the heat is staying in the torso, which your legs are heating up. In your torso are a lot of your vital organs, because if you just spread out the heat is going to go everywhere.

We should also always where a life jacket when you are on the boat or not on the water, because it is extremely difficult to put it your life jacket on when you are in the water.

Mahishasura and Durga

LI: to identify the purpose of narratives and also to identify the underlying morals/themes/explanations in myths, legends, and fairytales.
This week is the last week of myths from around the world. This time I did Mahishasura and Durga from India. I had to tell the lessons in the story of Mahishasura and Durga. I also told my questions about Mahishasura and Durga. I also did my Reading Notes whoch helps me understand the story. I used specific reading strategies, on specific times. Like, I used prediction before reading the text or book. Then during reading I could use Making Connection. Then after reading I could use summarising.

Kiwi Can

LI: to learn how to solve problems
This week was the last week we learned about Problem Solving. Problem solving is when there is a problem and we have to solve it. It could be a accident, bullies, and more. We also have to ask for help. Most people have a problem but they don't ask for help, because they are shy or afraid. Their expectations are that they would get embarrassed because someone will tease, mock, and bully them.

After that we went onto our energizer. We got into groups of two and had a arch of hoops. Each group got into a line and the person in the front had to jump into the hoops. Then when the person meets the other person from the other group, they have to play rock, paper, scissors. Whoever wins carry's on going to the other persons base. Each time they got to the other persons base was a point.

Then we talked about problem solving, and how to ask for help. How we personally feel when we feel shy to ask for help.

Then after our session we played Matt Dodgeball. We were all counted numbers. We were in our number groups. If one of the Kiwi-can leaders say a number the numbers have to go in the middle of the room and try to dodge the balls that are rolling to them. Whoever won from each number would go to the finals, and then compete with the others that won from the other numbers. Then after that we played GKQ (General Knowledge Questions) then went back to class.

Sunrise & Sunset Structures

LI: to make a silhouette with a digital and physical environment
Today we made a city-scape silhouette. We used both digital and physical things to make it. What we first did was find city-scape then trace it or shape it up with blocks. When we did that we printed it. We first made a sunset or sunrise with paper, and some glue. Then we added our city-scapes to our sunrise or sunset. A silhouette is outline or shadow of a animal, person, or and object. A city-scape is a painting, drawing of a city, or a place that is important.

Commenting

LI: to learn how to smartcomment
This week I commented on Akuhata's blogpost. It had a good DLO, but didn't really have anything for his blurb. He did not write what he learned, did, and how he learned. I told him what was good, and what there was to fix.

Tables Conga

LI: to learn our times tables
Today I was playing Tables Conga. Tables Conga is a Maths game for times tables. You have a character and you pick what times tables you are going to do. Then you have to find the tables and then the answers. Here is the lick to Tables Conga: http://www.transum.org/software/Game/TablesConga.asp

Keyboarding Tutor

LI: to learn how to keyboard properly
This week I played this keyboard tutoring. It showed me the home row keys, and had a bunch of words to write. If I got the word wrong I would see the color red on the word I made a mistake on. It also shows you how much errors you have and shows a score.

Kiwi Sport

LI: to learn water safety skills
This week we went to Swimming. When we got there we learned how to save people that are drowning. We demonstrated it with a partner. One person would go in the water pretending to panic and call for help. The other person would get a noodle and pull them out. We learned when trying to save people we had to get something to give them and pull them out. It could be a branch, rope, or even a noodle. When pulling someone out we should always ly down on our front. Just so we can keep the noodle, or rope secure.

Then after that we learned how to tread water. When we float on water we should sit under the water like there us a seat there, and when doing that spin your feet in circles wide and long. Then while doing that we have to do a sculling motion. Then put one hand out and shout "HELP! HELP! HELP!". Also we should never swim in water that is above our head. When you get tired of spinning your legs, and sculling you should do a back starfish. Then poke your hand out for a short time and shout "HELP!", then go back to your floating position.

Procedural Text

LI: to write a procedural text
This week we wrote a procedural text. We wrote the procedural text about how to make a 3D shape. We had to write the whole structure and use the language features. The structure is TEMPS. We had to write the Title. The End Result which shows the result at the end of the procedure. After that I had to write the materials or ingredients you need for the procedure. Lastly Picture and steps. While we tell the steps, you have to show pictures to see if they got the same result. Link to Procedural Text: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1upmPtfRjD-GPsH9IK2DHERie35-1EM2-jzIECMB0hDw/edit?usp=sharing

Izanagi and Izanami

LI: to identify the purpose of narratives and to also identify the underlying morals/themes/explanations in myths, legends, and fairytales.
This week we learned about Myths around the world. We had four choices of myths they were:
Izanagi and Izanami from Japan
Mahishasura and Durga from India
Lac Long Quan from Vietnam
Cuchulainn from Ireland
I picked Izanagi and Izanami from Japan. The story is that there is there were two people called Izanami and Izanagi. They came from the heavens and were married. They gave birth to islands, and gods. One day Izanami gave birth to the fire god. She had a burning fever and then died. Izanagi went crazy and went to the Underworld to get her. But she looked hideous and then were divorced. Life and Death were away from each other. We had to make a DLO about Izanagi and Izanami.

Foundations

LI: to learn the different types of foundation
This week for Inquiry, Mr Ogilvies Inquiry group talked about different types of foundation. The were five they learned. The first was the slab foundation or slab grad. The slab foundation is when you dig a whole. Then fill it up with some concrete. Then also add some bars to give more strength for it to support the weight of what of a structure. The next foundation is called the Pier or Pile footing. A pier foundation is like a fence. You dig a hole, then put a wooden stick, or stone, then fill it up with concrete. They would normally support the weight of a house. It can support it by having a surface on the large stick. Then they would build the structure on top of the foundation. The walls are their to make rooms and separate rooms from each other. But they also support the weight of floors and roofs. You dig a hole, then put the wall in. After that fill in the hole with concrete to keep it stable and still. Then they learned about the column foundation. A column foundation is a structure that is under concrete and made as a base of a wall. The foundation is part of the structure that directs contact with the soil that loads into it. Then lastly they learned about the Cassen foundation. The cassen is a watertight retaining structure used as a bridge. The construction of a concrete dam, or for repair of ships.

Kiwi Can

LI: to show resilience and solve problems
This week we had a new topic for Kiwi Can. Our new topic is Problem Solving. Problem Solving is when there is a problem and you try to solve it. For Example there is a bully, bullying someone. That is a problem. Then what should you do to solve that problem. Resilience is when you never give up and bounce back. Never give up, achieve, and strive.

So we got in to our energizer which was called 'Human Knot'. We got into separate groups. We had to put our right hand up and hold someones hand across you from your group. Then do the same thing with your left hand. Then we had to solve that problem of us being all tangled. We had to solve it by communication, teamwork and more. The first group that was untangled were the winners.

After that we talked about what are the problems we face and how do we solve them. After that we played a activity called 'Mat Dodge-ball'. We were all counted numbers. We were in our number groups. If one of the Kiwi-can leaders say a number the numbers have to go in the middle of the room and try to dodge the balls that are rolling to them. Whoever won from each number would go to the finals, and then compete with the others that won from the other numbers.

Angle Measuring

LI: identify and construct right, acute and obtuse angles and to begin to appreciate the degree, unit of measurement of angle, also to know the degree value of angles that are simple fractions of a whole turn and know that the angle at a point is 360°
This week for Maths we learned how to use a protractor. We had a sheet. There were angles on the sheets, we had to measure the angles and write down what the angle was. We learned by remembering the five different angles we learned last week. The five different angles we learned last week is:
Right angle: exactly 90 degrees
Straight angle: exactly 180 degrees
Acute angle: 0 - 90 degrees
Obtuse angle: 90 - 180 degrees
Reflex angle: 180 - 360 degrees
This is how to use a protractor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPc0imoebzI

Skytower Trip

LI: to learn about the history, and construction of the sky-tower
Today we went to the sky-tower and learned about the history and the construction of the sky-tower. We got split into groups. So first my group went to watch a video of the construction, and history of the sky-tower. The sky-tower was first built in 1997. It cost 75 million dollars to build the sky-tower. It is 328 metres tall. It is also a really safe building. It can withstand earthquakes, and lightning. How it can withstand lightning is, a device that is on top of the sky-tower and absorbs the electricity from the lightning. How it also can withstand earthquakes is because the surface or foundation is really deep underground. When they're is a fire or a earthquake they go into the refuge level. Which is a place for people to go safely when they're is a natural disaster. They are three refuge levels. They are all on level 44, 45, and 46. Each refuge level can hold 120 people. So 120 x 3 = 360. While we did that we also talked about volcano's. There are 48 volcano's in Auckland. You can see 20 of the volcano's from the sky-tower. The sky-tower weighs about 6000 elephants.

Commenting

LI: to learn how to smartcomment
This week I commented on Lukahs blogpost. He was blogging about the structure and language features of a Procedural text. He was doing really good. He also had a blurb and had good labels.

Daily 6 Multiplication

LI: to learn multiplication and division
Today I did one of my Daily 6's. One of the Daily 6's I did was Multiplication and Division. There were levels. There was Level 1, 2, then 3. I started on Level 1. I had to write down my two times tables, five times tables, and my 10 times tables. I had to write all of them.

Keyboarding Drill

LI: to learn how to type with the correct fingers
This week I went onto a website that taught me how to keyboard. I learned where to put my fingers at. You put your left hand at:
Your left pinkie on A
Your left ring finger on S
Your left middle finger on D
Your left index finger on F
Then we put our right hand on:
Your right pinkie on the semi colon which is ;
Your right ring finger on L
Your right middle finger on K
Your right index finger on J
In between your two index fingers there are G and H. You also type those with your index finger. On F and J there are little bumps. You have to put your index finger on those.

Kiwi Sport

LI: to learn how to be safe in water
This week when we got to Swimming we first talked about Ocean and River Safety. There are some rips in the ocean. A rip is a patch of smooth water. In the ocean when there are rips you have to let the rip take, but you have to go on an angle then go on shore. When the rip is taking you on an angle to the shore you can get yourself up. If you are in a river, the river is always flowing to one direction. You have to do the same. Let the current take you on an angle then go on shore.

Then when we talked about that we got with our Instructors. We first did sculling feet first. Why we did feet first rather then head first is because you could hit something with your head, its better getting hit on the feet. Secondly when you bounce on the object (rocks, logs, etc) you can push yourself back. Sculling is when you lie on your back and use you hands to move. After that we did low dive. We had to jump in water while our hands were above our heads. We had to dive in an angle, rather then flat. Then we did streamlines. Streamlines are when you have you arms straight above your head, when we did that we also added arm strokes. Then after that we did a rotation. We were floating on our front then we had to rotate on our back when our energy is gone on the front. Then when it was the end our instructor said to jump and high five him, then do a swimming skill.

10 Bridges

LI: is to learn about structures
This week we went on Google maps and looked at 10 bridges. We had to find 5 international bridges and  5 New Zealand bridges. We also had to write a description about each bridge. We had to write the year it was built, the cost for it to build, the materials used to build, and the type of bridge it is.

Tuesday, 14 August 2018

Myths, Legends, and Fairytales (Maui)

LI: to identify the purpose of narratives.
LI: to identify the underlying morals/themes/explanations in myths, legends, and fairy - tales.
This week we learned about Maui. Maui is a trickster demi god. We learned about him and read a story about him. One story was Maui and the sun. Another was a story about Maui catching fishes so big they became the Polynesian islands. For our DLO we had to write the main purpose of the story. We also did a reading notes. We had to do the Read Strategies before, during, and after reading. We did the Reading Strategies with the Maui Stories.

Structure and Language Features (Procedural)

LI: to identify the structures and language features of a procedural text
This week I learned about the structure and language features of a procedural text. The structure of a Procedural text is TEMPS:
T is for title
E is for end results: it shows you the result of the procedure. So it could show you the result of your pastry, or your art and more.
M is for materials: the things you need in a procedure, like your stuff for your origami, or ingredients for your pastry.
P is for pictures: so when you are up to a step you can see if the results are the same.
S is for steps: it guides you, it shows you what to do with the materials, it shows you how to use things and more.
The language features are infinitive tense or simple tense, you have to use verbs at the start of your steps. You also have to write in Third Person Perspective.

Angles

LI: identify and construct right, acute and obtuse angle and begin to appreciate the degree, unit of measurement of angle to also know the degree value of angles that are simple fractions of a whole turn and to also know that the angle at a point is 360°
This week we learned about angles. We learned about acute angles, obtuse angles, right angles, straight angles, and a reflex angle. A acute angle is a angle that is between 0 - 90 degrees. The obtuse angle is completely different. The angle is 90 - 180 degrees. A right angle is exactly 90 degrees. Same with the straight angle, it is just line. The straight angle is exactly 180 degrees. The reflex angle is a angle that is 180 - 360 degrees. We have also played a game called the Alien Angle. We ge given and angle and have to estimate.

Commenting

LI: to learn how to smartcomment
This week I commented on Andrews's blog - post. He was blogging about his Cybersmart. His cybersmart was about media. He made word clouds to show how it portrayed him.

Quick Narrative

LI: to write a quick narrative
This week for Writing we made a narrative from photos. We had four choices of photos to pick. We had to pick one of them and make a narrative out of it. We had to start beginning to the end. We had to write the Orientation, Problem, Events, and Solution. The Orientation is when you introduce the character. You talk about the 5 W's but we don't do why, so its the 4 W's. Who is in the main character, what is happening? When is this happening? Where is it? The problem is what is going wrong, what isn't going planned to what the character expected, just what is going wrong. The events is what are they going to do to fix that problem, how are they doing it, what are they doing throughout trying to fix the problem. The solution is when the problem is mostly fixed or solved. But solutions are not always shoved, they could be resolved. Here is my narrative: https://docs.google.com/document/d/10WhSYffTRmnwcX2GYdXrGPM7E88sXJ1q4pJIoXGx_cY/edit?usp=sharing

Compare and Contrast Bridges

LI: compare and contrast Panmure Bridge a international environment
This week we compared the Panmure Bridge and the Auckland Harbour Bridge. We had to see:
The Year the bridge was built, the materials that were used to make the bridge, how much money did it take to make the bridge, and the length, height, and width of the bridge. After that we made a second one. We compared Panmure Bridge and a international bridge from around the world. In the second one we also had to find out what kind or type of bridge was it.

Kiwi Sport

LI: to be safe in the water and learn survival skills in the water
This week for Swimming when we first got there we learned about Hyperthermia and Hypothermia. Hyperthermia is when you are really hot. Your temperature is extremely hot. We talked about what we should do and what we shouldn't. When we are really hot we should go to a cold shower, but when we do that don't make the water cold instantly. Make the water cold slowly. If you put someone with hyperthermia in a cold shower instantly, they will have a shock because the body is not comfortable with being in hot the cold temperature quickly. Same with someone who has Hypothermia. The signs when someone has Hypothermia is:
Lips turn blue
Teeth are chattering
Being confused
There body is tricking them
being abnormal such as: talking funny, not making sense when talking, walking funny.
So when we finished we got into our groups. So first we did streamlines. Our hands together above our head and then kicking our feet. Then we floated on the water on our backs. Then we did something tricky and hard. We had to do a streamline then rotate to floating on our backs. When we did rotated we had to be straight and flat. When we all did that we did Dolphin Dives. It was really fun. How to Dolphin Dive is when you put you feet together, kick them together and wiggle your body. We only used our feet to move underwater.

3D Shapes

LI: use the terms faces, edges, and vertices to describe models of polyhedra
This week for Math we learned about 3 Dimensional Shapes. We made 3 Dimensional shapes out of toothpicks and Blu tack. We had to get into partners and make them. The 3 Dimensional shapes we have made is a:
Cube
Diamond
3D Pyramid
Rectangular Prism
Then we had to check out how much Vertices and faces there are in each shape.

Tengu's Lessons

LI: to learn about tengu and his morals
This week we learned about a myth called tengu. Tengu is a red demon goblin who some believe is a Mini God or Shinto God. There are many stories about him. So our DLO was to get as much stories as we can and tell the morals and what lessons were taught in the story.

Kiwi Can

LI: to learn how to be resilient and set a goal
This week for Kiwi Can our Theme was still Resilience and Topic was Goal Settings. Resilience is bouncing back and never giving up when you want to do something or achieve. Goal Settings is setting a goal you want to strive for and achieve. The reason setting a goal is super important is because, you have something to focus on, it could impact your life, and something to strive for and achieve. When you achieve that goal you feel great and you want to achieve another goal that is a higher level. So our Energizer was called Snatch. We were in a circle. There was a rope shaped as a circle. In the rope circle were cones. A song was playing we had to go clockwise around the circle and when the song stopped, we had to snatch a cone. If you didn't snatch it, you were out. Our activity was Octopus. Two groups, each groups were on different sides. They had to get to the other side without being tagged, but when we went to the other side we had to do a action. So we crawled to the other side, and more.

Commenting

LI: to learn how to smartcomment
This week I commented on Lukahs blog post. He was blogging about Myths, Legends, and Fairy tales. It was really good. He made a Venn Diagram about the differences and similarities between them. He also did Reading Comprehension Strategies and when to use it when reading a book.

Construction (Panmure Bridge)

LI: how have it changed and adapted human overtime
This term our new theme was Construction. So we are looking at buildings that have an impact on society or maybe the world. So this week our structure we picked was the Panmure Bridge. It was really cool discovering things about Panmure Bridge. We learned by getting into groups of three and make this slide. We also did an activity before this called "I think, I wonder, I see". We had eight pieces of paper. There was a photo on each and we had to write what we see, wonder, and think. We all thought the pictures weren't related. By the time everyone finished we found out all the old images were actually related to Panmure Bridge.

Narrative

LI: to write a quick narrative
This week as a class we all brainstormed or planned a story together. The story was based on a picture we have saw. We made up characters, names, places, and all that stuff. So how we did it was Coggle. We brainstormed our ideas and put it down there. We also did the opposite S. We started from the top while going to the bottom we explain the main ideas on there. So Orientation, then Problem, Events, then Solution.

Kiwi Sport

LI: how to be safe in water
This week we went swimming again. So the skill we first learned was floating on our backs and kicking. After we did that we did torpedo arm while drifting, and torpedo arms while kicking. Torpedo arms are putting your hands together, and above your head. Then we did starfish on our back and we also did a specific actions with our legs. Legs together, spread out wide, and push it back together. Then at the end our Instructor got a hoop and we went underwater and through the hoop.

Kiwi Can

LI: to show resilience and set a goal
This week we were learning about Resilience and Goal Settings. Resilience means to never give up when you make a mistake, bounce back and keep going. Goal Settings is to set a goal and achieve it, but we have to have a plan to achieve that goal, but if that plan doesn't work we can ask someone for help. For our energizer was a game called Tag Snatch. Everyone had a tag and had to steal. Last person was the winner. Then after we had a session about why goals are so important.  The reason achieving goals are so important is because that it could give us an impact on our lives, better futures, something to focus on, and something to strive for. Then we went onto our activity. Our activity was called Ball Control. We had to get in a partner boy and girl. then we got into teams but had to stay with our partners. Then we had a ball to control with our partners but we had to do it with a specific body part, like back to back and other things. After that we played GKQ and ended the session.

How does the Media portray myself?

LI: to identify the purpose of information presented in media and to understand that media is made for a purpose
This week for Cyber smart we were continuing on with Media. So this week for Cyber smart we all talked about how the Media portrays who we are. So we got two photos of ourselves. One was appropriate for school and the other one was appropriate for our family and friends. We had to portray each of those photo. After that we made a Word Cloud to portray us.
